Okay I’ve got this idea, stop me if you think it’s ridiculous.

There’s a new download rule which allows any song, old or new, single or album track, to be counted in the official top 40.

Radio fourth are doing an experiment. Two of their presenters are asking listeners to download ‘blame it on the boogie’ by the Jacksons all this week to see if they can get it in to the top 40.

If it works I think it would be great if we did the same thing with a Moz/Smiths song.

We could create a poll in order to choose which song. Preferably one that hasn’t charted before and is hardly ever played on Radio. The more non-radio friendly the better. We could announce it on the main board at the beginning of a week and ask everyone to download the chosen song at some time that week.

I know we all spent a lot of money on Morrissey last year, album, singles, gigs and so on and I know that a lot of you don’t really care about the charts. But it’s only 79p and I think it would be a fun thing to do. And if we all pull together and it works I think it could be a really proud moment.

If no one’s interested then that’s fair enough. It was only an idea. Obviously in order for it to work a lot of people would have to get involved.

But if you are interested in taking part, please leave a comment and perhaps suggest some songs.

Thanks :)

Hi

Good idea. I wou probably pay for something like Don't Make Fun of Daddys Voice or something else as catchy/cheeky/uptempo.

Perhaps one of the mid 90s b sides which are failry unavaliable coudl be an option?

Perhaps Nobody Loves Us or You Must Please Remember...

...no wait - I've got it!

Swallow On My Neck! The only choice - a rare gem that most of us love!!

Great choices :)

Yeah I think it would be a great idea to choose a song that we all love and thought should have been released as a single.

Here’s a few of my song suggestions

‘Meat is Murder’ (can you imagine)
‘Life is a pigsty’, I know a lot of us would have loved this to have been the fourth single.
‘The never played symphonies’
‘Trouble loves me’

I agree with all of these, but i would have to add, National front disco.

I would download loads if it helped, but dont you have to register for one of those type of sites? (never usedd one have no idea how it works etc etc)

You can download itunes for free, here’s the link
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

If you want to buy music you can set up an account.

Songs cost 79p and albums are usually £7.99

National front disco, good choice ;)

I would go for National front disco as well. See the muppets in your avatar, whats their names again? I always forget!

Brilliant idea.

'Trouble Loves Me' (as if you hadn't guessed) and 'Jack The Ripper' are two of my favourites, so my vote goes in for them. But maybe we should try something more up-tempo, like 'Hairdresser on Fire'.
I know it's obvious but 'Everyday is like Sunday' is such a great song and very accessible to a non-Morrissey fan (or those who are fans, but just don't know it yet) It missed out on the #1 spot the first time around; we should try and get it there now.

Some Smiths suggestions.

‘How soon is now’
‘I know it’s over’
‘Well I wonder’

As someone suggested, Meat is Murder is a great choice and would please Morrissey immensely I imagine.

National Front Disco or Sorrow will come in the end are other fun choices.

‘Well I wonder’

In my opinion, the most underrated Smiths song by far.

Nothing would please Moz quite as much as if "Hand in Glove" became a huge 24 years after the original release!

Other suggestions:
Ouija Board
Pashernate Love
Nobody Loves Us
Sing Your Life
I Know It's Over (the live version from Thank Your Lucky Stars. Nothing would go over well on the radio quite like "Jesus Christ! Don't be SO STUPID!"

This is a wonderful idea!!
I agree with The Smiths -- Well I wonder
Morrissey -- National Front Disco.
I think from Morrissey: He Knows I'd Love To See Him, Dissappointed, Come Back to Camden, & Seasick, Yet Still Docked, & also Certain People I Know. And for The Smiths...The Headmaster Ritual, Rusholme Ruffians, How Soon Is Now? [of course], Nowhere Fast, Barbarism Begins at Home, & yes of course, Meat Is Murder, & William, It Was Really Nothing.
......Good choices??

A few of you have selected 90s b-sides. I don’t know about other download sites but they’re not available on itunes. They only have more resent YATQ and ROTT b-sides.

my choices would be:

Boxers
Sunny
Life is a Pigsty

And on The Smiths front:

Meat Is Murder
Hand In Glove
Still Ill

This is a UK chart experiment but it would be a great help if fans from other countries also took part. In itunes you can select the UK store in the ‘my store’ section.

Never Played Symphonies or Friday Mourning get my vote, It should definitely be a Morrissey rather than a Smiths song.

I am with the great idea brigade, love it. I suppose we have to decide on one sometime. I do think we should go for a Morrissey song but if it has to be a Smiths I am with Hand in glove, imagine getting that into the top ten :) brilliant.

Definitely. I mean we all bought 3 copies of boy happy (I presume??) and that never made it. I think Meat is Murder would be a good choice - more people need to hear that song.

It's got to be a morrissey song
as morrissey is still going.
Joyce will get some money if we download smiths songs and morrissey probably won't have anything to do with it.

It needs to be something obscure or just a classic...like
I know it's gonna happen someday!

This is a great idea but it has to be something available in all download stores. Except for Hatful of Hollow (oddly) The Smiths aren't on iTunes. As for the song to download, it has to something pre-Quarry, and something that was not released a single. Maybe Speedway (but that is my favorite song, so I am biased).

Okay here’s the list so far.

As I mentioned earlier some of the song suggestions were 90s b-sides and unfortunately aren’t available for download. And the maximum poll amount is 15 so I had to narrow it down slightly.

Here’s the list.

Meat is Murder
How soon is now
Hand in glove
Well I wonder
I know it’s over
Trouble loves me
Don’t make fun of daddy’s voice
National front disco
The never played symphonies
Life is a pigsty
Come back to Camden
Friday morning
Seasick, yet still docked
Speedway
I know it’s gonna happen someday

Is there any songs you think should be added or taken away or would you be satisfied with this as the poll.

I think it should be morrissey only, or solo morrissey performing smiths songs.

Good point. But if we choose a smiths song and it makes the top 40 I don't think Morrissey would mind to much about that.

I'm going with either National Front Disco or Speedway ;)

In my opinion it should be a Morrissey one this time, Hand In Glove can be saved for Christmas :p! :D

January 14, 2007, 03:50 AM
I'll throw in my two cents.

I think "My love life" would the obvious choice because its such a great song it would probably open a lot of people up to Morrisseys other great, lesser known songs.

If we're talking about something a little more obscure:

Trouble loves me or You must please remember (a criminally underrated song)

You are spot on about YMPR, it is among his best ever and it truly is criminal that it isn't a classic on par with its sister song Nobody Loves Us. Trouble Loves Me too is one of my favorites, and My Love Life is so beautiful and even though it is kind of slow it is a pretty good introduction to Moz. So basically I agree with everything you've said. :)

To add my opinion again I think the song must meet the criteria:
Be a solo song
Be in pretty much all download stores (I.E., iTunes doesn't have Southpaw Grammar)
Has not been released a single (so unfortunately eliminating My Love Life)
Something we can all agree upon (so a fan favorite or old classic, like Life is a Pigsty of Maudlin Street or Nobody Loves Us)
Something that is preferably not very radio friendly (in the vein of Life is a Pigsty or something)

As a combination of the last two points I think obscure songs like Pashernate Love, while a song I really like and would be hilarious to see in the top 40, isn't popular enough with Moz's fanbase to have their backing. Now let me try and think of some songs that fit all 5 points.

Kuiper

I say these eight songs are the best candidates:
Alsatian Cousin
Late Night, Maudlin Street
Disappointed
Jack the Ripper
Speedway
Trouble Loves Me
Come Back to Camden
Life is a Pigsty

Thats about £1.60 isn't it?
