Just finished reading it and the most surprising thing in the entire book it's Johnny Rogan's Bio on the last page. For those who don't know, it follows:
"...Rogan survived and continues to lead a nocturnal existence, writing in isolation; he still has no e-mail address, internet facility, mobile phone, credit card, bank card, DVD, video, fridge freezer, dish washer, car or any other vehicle, but has a late afternoon routine of scouring local supermarkets in search of out of date food at bargain prices"
And at the top there's a creepy picture of Johnny with a massive beard and long fingernails.

"The Severed Alliance, one of popular music's key biographies, prompted Morrissey to call for Rogan's immediate death. Rogan survived and continues to lead a nocturnal existence, writing in isolation; he still has no e-mail adress, internet facility, mobile phone, credit card, bank card, DVD, video, fridge freezer, dish washer, car or any other vehicle, but has a late afternoon routine of scouring local supermarkets in search of out of date food at bargain prices"

Listen this Mo v Rogan thing is rubbish. They get on well together and thats a fact.

Where did you hear that?
It's a (very) common theme on here that Moz despises Rogan - the public comments towards Rogan are well-documented - although I think that Rogan has tried to lead people to think differently.
I'm not contesting your comments - I'd just be interested in reading references to support it.

It seems hardly surprising to me. For those who don't know, the Johnny Rogan bio in "Severed Alliance", 2nd edition, 1993 (I don't own the first edition, so I can't speak about it) contains this paragraphs:
"...Obsessive in his devotion to particular projects, Rogan has been known to spend years researching material, usually self-financed and without a prior commission. On one occasion, he wrote in isolation for an entire year without speaking to another human being.
(...)
Rogan still lives alone, despite a girl-friend, often works till daybreak, doesn't own any property nor any motor vehicle, computer, word processor, freezer, electric kettle, television, video, credit card, or any form of insurance. Tape recorded interviews are still his primary method of social communication. This is his tenth book. Barring sequels on the same theme, it may prove to be his last."
There is no creepy picture of Johnny or anyone else with long beard and fingernails, though. :D
I suppose he likes to show that he has a sense of humour, since he doesn't normally display it in the rest of his books.
I'd be a lot more interested to know what his new book is like. I pre-ordered it from amazon but it won't arrive until February (at least).

When did Rogan try to lead people to think differently? It certainly didn't seem so from his comments that I've read.

So, it appears that he's lost the girlfriend between these two books. I can't imagine why.

Mmmm....I seem to think that I made that comment based on something I read in 'The Albums', and thinking, "Rogan's covering up that hostility from Moz" or even that "he wants readers to think the frost has thawed", or something like that.
Apols - my short-term memory is quite poor. I'll see if I can back-track through the book and find the reference if that's of interest.

Cancel it now + save your money. It'll tell you nothing you don't already know/think (although you may want to challenge him on a few things).
The link below takes you to an earlier posting just after the book came out, I think. It's not got Goddard's depth, feel or style, and I'd like to see Goddard do the Moz albums what he did for The Smiths' ones. I think it could be much better.
I'm not unduly critical of Rogan per se, either - I liked the Severed Alliance; but this is just not doing it for me. (As I posted elsewhere, I put it down half-way through and didn't pick it up again for about 2 months!)
Someone on here will sell you their copy, anyway - see above thread or go onto m'place forum.

Dear nightandday
I can't seem to locate the part of the book i thought had implied what I previously thought - how embarrassing!
Apologies for giving you 'duff' information or misleading you - and others on the site.
I'll try to do more homework in future...:o

I agree, Rogan can't even come close to what Goddard did with Songs That Saved Your Life.
