From today's NME:

NME - "Why does your singing voice sound so English?"

JM - "I lived in Suffolk from the ages of 14 to 18. I went to Andy's Records in Norwich and bought The Queen Is Dead, and it just saved me."

Also, from the accompanying article - "Thanks to the way he cloaks his stroppy sentiment in ornate language and chirpy 60's-style compositions, Mercer has been compared to Morrissey. He's certainly a keen Moz student, but displays none of his hero's magnetic showmanship. Instead he's more like Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch, a voice for the shy and sensitive teens that brash modern life has alienated."
