so...the reason why i put up the poll is mainly because of the whole "straight man wanting to sleep with morrissey". a lot of the men that jump on stage and want to shake his hand are straight. some theorize it's these men's homoerotic yearning for morrissey, coming to the surface; though i always felt they simply like the guy, and most importantly, they want to be like him. the truthfulness of words, conveying feelings that most societies keep men from sharing (we've all heard this before). morrissey is the straight man's escape from that way of living/thinking. but does sex come with it? I say for a decent number of straight men...yes. I know straight men who do not want to do anything sexual with any man (they are straight), but they would with morrissey. why is this?

the way i see it, for these men, having sex with morrissey is like masturbating. you are basically transposing yourself onto him (or him in you). it's ultimately a reflexive act; whether because you are convinced you are like him, or because you want to be so much like him--both the physical and the emotional. He being very attractive of course helps--on the surface he is what the ideal masculine is supposed to be. On the inside, he is what the masculine should be.

Hell yes! Any time, anywhere and in any conceivable way; he was gorgeous 20 years ago and he's just as gorgeous now.
But then, i'm frequently fuelled by lust; i've admired people in a platonic way, so i know it's possible, but from as early as i can remember sexual attraction has driven the feelings i have for celebrities (however, appearance is one of the few things we have to go on with people in the public eye). It's perhaps part of being a bisexual female (are we more masculine?) but then i think sex informs most people more than they care to admit. Furthermore, sexuality is so fluid nowadays; i'm not promiscuous by any means, but i've slept with every sexual orientation there is. This confused me greatly a couple of years ago, and i went off sex altogether, but what began as admiration for Morrissey's frankness about human nature soon turned into the feeling of "so you've been there too mate" ... and a crush was born. Yes - I can remember someone saying that in 'The Importance Of Being Morrissey', it was that Miranda something or other. I disagree with her. That programme seemed to interview a lot of people whose opinion is largely irrelevant.
You're both right. I thought it was funny in "The Importance of Being Morrissey" when that journalist, Miranda Sawyer (I think that's her name) said that 'it's always the men who hug him, not women'... while the footage of fan hugs on the beginning of the documentary showed that red-haired girl hugging him, and that brunette who literally jumped on him in the Live In Dallas video! :D

I always thought it was stupid that the media always insist that photos of Morrissey are 'homoerotic' and always emphasize only his appeal to men, when, in fact, he has a huge female fanbase. The % of men who hug him on stage might be larger, but women are generally - still - less aggressive when it comes to things like jumping on stage and hugging your idol...but the truth is, the majority of people who drool over his photos and who want to have sex with him are women.

It is very hard to say. (oh, the old and never-ending Nature vs Nurture debate!) There is definitely a difference, but I suspect it might be overemphasized and oversimplified. True, the psychological moment is more important to (most) women, but one shouldn't underestimate the importance of physicality to female sexual reactions. There might not be that many women who would get off on watching naked pictures of unknown men, but that doesn't mean that a woman would by no means ever be interested in seeing a picture of a naked man or couldn't be aroused by it... and it certainly doesn't mean that there aren't many women who would love to see a naked picture of a celebrity they like. And as I said, I also think, just as you do, that women are generally are far less inclined to view sex as a purely physical thing than men are. These two theories are not at odds with each other. Why would you think they are?

There is a widespread belief that sex is, for the most part, a physical thing - for instance, there are many people who think that 'sexual attraction' and 'physical attraction' are interchangeable terms. Which is not true - sexual attraction and sexual arousal often depend on psychological factors. I believe that there is no greater aphrodisiac than being really, madly in love with someone - it makes for the strongest sexual arousal possible. (Of course, it goes the other way round too - physical attractiveness does play a big part in falling in love; for women, too). And it's not just love, or even just a desire for intimacy (not necessarily with a person you love) - people can get sexually aroused by a number of other feelings, for instance: a desire to assert themselves, to prove something to themselves and others, rebelliousness, a need to feel that they're attractive, a desire to be degraded and/or abused, a desire to degrade and/or abuse someone else, a wish to feel power over someone, revenge, anger, etc. The point is, phychological factors play a huge role in people's sexual feelings and reactions.

Who told you that being a sex object is a bad thing in itself?! I'm sure Morrissey himself is very happy to know that people find him sexually attractive - he's said so more than once. Why would an idol be 'reduced' or somehow degraded for being a sex object?! What a stupid cliche... Quite the opposite... it could be quite degrading and offensive if you implied that someone whom you allegedly admire is sexually unattractive. Maybe it's just you never felt like a sex object yourself, because nobody finds you attractive - is that why you're so bitter?

night and day i agree with what you say. i also personally believe that the differences are cultural and social ones and not biological ones. brain scientists say that sex and love are 2 completely different things, by the way, and they have measured this recently by analyzing brainwaves. the conclusion: women do fall in love because they sense compatible genes in a mans physical appearance. but of course this is only an illusion of love. love grows out of this, or not. when love develops the brainwaves are different.

The whole fuss with the Aussie cleric was due to the underlying assumption that women are responsible for provoking lustful thoughts in men and so should be covered-
1)To discourage extramarital sex and so keep men “pure”.
2) to protect women from mens ungovernable desires.(ie she was asking for it).
Wrong! Desire is natural to both sexes and there is nothing bad about that in itself.
Personally I have no problem with men or women having enjoyable fantasies about whoever they want. However, the line is overstepped when the object-de-lust is leered at when clearly uninterested, or when one of a couple does not bother to hide their attraction to another person in order to provoke jealousy or as revenge.(disrespect)

I think you could easily reverse the genders in this argument.
I’m not saying it applies to everyone, but might be helpful in examining the underlying assumptions that are prevalent, but not always explicit.

I did find it rather funny that C-C was complaining that men were criticised for fantasising about barely dressed beauties with little musical talent, when Morrissey obviously aims to provoke desire in his audience with his shedding of clothing. Well, in my experience it's not all that uncommon, as most people who say they're gay usually end up admitting that they do fancy the opposite sex from time to time. I've had sexual experiences with a few supposedly 'gay' men and just as many supposedly 'straight' women. There are certainly some who say they are exclusively hetero or homo and would never contemplate swinging over to the other side. But even in this situation, people have been known to change their minds upon meeting someone new; one of my gay male friends stands as testament to that, having slept with his fair share of guys who have girlfriends and wives.
I think if you devote your attention to someone wholeheartedly, and you tick all the boxes they look for in a one night stand, or sex buddy, or relationship, most people are unconcerned what you look like beneath your clothes, as long as it looks attractive.
I think almost everbody wants to meet someone for a long term relationship, it's just that, along the way, our heads get turned by some rather magnetic characters. Morrissey is certainly one of these; whatever his sexuality, he attracts all kinds because he embodies the qualities people (and especially straight women) look for in a partner: looks, intelligence, social standing, economic stability and independence. It's not as if whoever did (or has) ended up in Morrissey's arms would ever be able to tell the world, so there has to be some psychological / biological reason for why so many women (myself included) think he's the bees knees and would surrender all dignity for him.

I voted for yes and for straight woman, but it's all hypothetically. I have to know him in real life before I can really decide if I wanted to...and if he wanted to . He's a beautiful person, so I can't deny the temptation.

I'm also hopefully mature and intelligent enough to recognise his many human failings and frailties. Frailties and weaknesses, which incidentally, have gone towards making up the subject matter for most of his lyrics over the years. The idea that we should automatically find him physically attractive and should blindly ignore his many foibles is completely idiotic, and is the sort of knee-jerk response I'd expect from your average teenage Sugababes or Beyonce fan.

I have the same problem. I'm an incredibly light sleeper and I can't sleep in the same bed as someone who snores. I wouldn't ever dump someone because of it, but I would say it put a strain on my last relationship as through lack of sleep I would be very grumpy all the time. It was when I was in halls and I would sometimes go and get in bed with my friends in the middle of the night, instead of sleeping with him! I couldn't imagine anything worse than living all the time with someone who snores and I shall avoid it at all costs!

You know, lyricists don't always write only about themselves, so to assume for 25 years he only wrote of his own miseries...but that's not even the point..

The reason WHY I like him is probably because of all these various faults and dark shadows in his character, and not in spite of them. I'm simply trying to show that you can be a dedicated fan of someone like him whilst keeping the nastier or unpleasanter aspects of their life firmly in perspective. Without them, we probably would never have seen many of the lyrics or ideas that his highly creative mind has spawned, and this board likely wouldn't exist. It's quite often the so-called negative things in a person's temperament or psyche that generate the most positive ideas or creativity. So by pointing out his flaws I'm simply trying to remind everyone of what it is that makes him Morrissey...
