If i'd gone to a gig with my dad, he'd have propped up the bar and got horribly drunk I would imagine  at least this way, he just shows my mother up :D
There's no way my dad would've gone to a concert with me (not that I would have asked him either ;)). Apparently no good music has been made since the 60s. :D

We don't give V much pocket money because she fritters at a rate that scares even her. But we do shell out for clothes, tickets and the like. We still have Dan the Impecunious living with us, too, so we suddenly have four children.

She and the bf do the paper round three nights a week (when Tom's going to be back from college too late to do it himself).

There's also money available if the kids want to wash/tidy out the cars, but no-one seems to want the cash that much.

Whenever I talk about getting a job my parents always go "You can hang out the washing/wash the dishes/wash the car/make the beds if you want." And then I always lose all enthusiasm for the idea of working. This is why I don't have a job.

you are too young to get a job, but you can earn your pocket money.

I'm not too young to get a job, 14 is the minimum age. I don't actually really get pocket money either. It's more like I ask for money when I need it, and if I'm lucky I'll get it. I go for ages without spending anything and then some weekends, like if I go to an all day gig or stay with friends out of London, I spend way too much money.

If you get a job at 14, employers can pay you absolute peanuts, £1 an hour if they want. Minimum wage doesn't apply until you're 16, and then it goes up when you're 18 and 21.

Nope. Lots of my friends parents don't either. It's more like "I'm going to a gig on Friday night, can I have some money?" or "I'm going record shopping can I have some money?" It's just not a formal amount. My mum keeps meaning to do it, but she's never decided on how much to give me.

LMAO- I WISH I could go skinny dipping, but the pool is in the middle of the complex and it's lighted. So....no, unfortunately. When I was in England, I loved the way it was sunny for one hour and then pouring with rain the next. You never knew what to expect! Ahh, you should just fiddle with the lights, then leg it starkers into the pool! ;) Yeah, I got dressed yesterday based on the fact it was sunny, and when I left the house it clouded over and I was freezing in my t-shirt. I am going to sound like the old man here. I had this conversation last night with someone. This is the problem with what is going on. People all around are criticizing what McCain AND Obama are saying about the economic crisis. They are not saying what needs to be said and that is why they are each criticized for stammering. It was not the government that caused this, it was the people. Imagine if either candidate turned around and said... the american people themselves got themselves into this mix?

The banks were privately run institutions run by private citizens. It was the greed of the people when it came to "pay it later" and "spending more than you make." No one wants to hear that though.

You hit the nail on the head. If you did not have enough money you did not go out. I was raised the same way. How many people fail to understand that. They say... "I have every right to go out and its not fair that money should limit my ability to do so."

I know of someone that bought a home that they could not afford by themselves under the idea that they would rent a level out. Well what is happening? Their tenants did not pay the rent on time last month because they wanted to go on vacation.

Basic premise that people do not understand... you do not spend more than you make or have the ability to pay back.

I've had a terrible time finding a job (resumes online, applications everywhere), so I just decided to make my own! :D

This is what I tell everyone: Teachers, cops, firemen, waste removal, postal are all jobs with step salary positions with job security and quality health insurance.

Hell - I would give you a badge and a gun.

You hit the nail on the head. If you did not have enough money you did not go out. I was raised the same way. How many people fail to understand that. They say... "I have every right to go out and its not fair that money should limit my ability to do so."

I just don't understand why people have to spend a lot of money when they go out. If you have the money and you can do it then go ahead and have fun. But a lot of people just spend and spend on a credit card of all things and then they are paying it off forever.

BF and I go out a lot but we don't spend any money at all. We just go walk around and look at things, but we come back home and eat, and we don't buy anything.

LOL - not quite... the maintenance groundskeeping job that I had was nothing but labor. I learned quite a bit on the job as far as basic woodworking, electric, plumbing and the like but it was something that anyone with two hands could have done and a determination for a paycheck.

that is interesting, what age did you start doing that type of work?

It does sound like you were quite a determined and hard working person from a young age. Not everyone has that quality.

I was considering postal, and I've been thinking about teacher. When I get a little more school I will look into teacher some more. What I'm qualified for right now and have experience in though isn't hiring right now.

I am actually a very good shot.

I find that utter bullshit because with a bit of ingenuity and hard work there is always money to be made.

I didn't mean in general - I meant for a 14 year old in Britain right now, it would not be worth the pay, because if you are not 16 they can pay you £1 an hour if they like. Unless you are starving, who would work for that, and what could you possibly save from it?

My black hole goes to books. :( $10 isn't that much for a gig. What kind of punk do you listen to?

Everyone has their black hole, some more understandable than others. I have a friend who will go out and spend £100 on makeup. I don't get this. I listen to a bit of all types of punk, but mostly anarcho, folk-punk, 80s hardcore and crust. And then heavier post-punk like Husker Du, Mission Of Burma etc.

14 through 19/20? It was back breaking labor but I did learn a lot of "how to" stuff while working there.

She can babysit, type papers for classmates, tutor, run errands for people, sweep out or wash dishes. If she wants money there is money to be made. Hell, one Christmas when Power Rangers were all the rage, I made sure I got a case and sold them on line. If you want to hustle there are always legal ways to make money. It involves finding a service that people are willing to pay for.

Yeah, I think my problem is that I don't really care quite enough about money to commit to stuff. If I found something that I enjoyed doing, then that would be different. But while I don't have to work, I'm not bothered enough about earning extra cash to do something I don't like.

I have to say, I've always been like that. My father is useless with money, my mum firmly held the purse strings at home! She tought me very young about the value of money, if I wanted something, I saved for it, even when I was small. Even I have been struggling recently though, times are hard, I don't go out a lot, or buy new clothes or CDs and stuff, but just paying the rent and the bills and food has been tough recently. i've been overdrawn every month recently, but thank GOD I've just got my annual pay rise, which is making things easier.

to an extent, i agree with what you're saying about not buying things that you don't have the resources to pay for. i was always brought up with the 'neither a borrower nor a lender be' ideal and it's a good principle to try to live by. on the other hand, i'm in the relatively fortunate position that allows me to buy some of the things i want (and i suspect you are too). if there's something i can't afford, i try to save up. but as i said, that's what was instilled into me by family when i was growing up. that's accident of birth though; many people are not trained to avoid credit where it can be avoided.

(i don't know what the situation in the u.s.a. is, but certainly, in the u.k.) the financial institutions bear a huge responsibility for the situation they currently find themselves in - at least as much as borrowers. for the last decade they've been falling over themselves to sell their customers money - as have credit card companies and other organisations. it's their job to make actuarial decisions about their customers' ability to repay and to lend responsibly. moreover, they're insured against risk of customers defaulting. in the course of my work, i've come into contact with scores of people who should never have been lent money. you don't need to be an actuary to calculate the risk of somebody who's on Income Support and too ill/disabled to work being unable to repay their debts. i've taken great pleasure in assisting many people in becoming bankrupt and essentially saying to their creditors, "fuck you".

Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Rollins Band are all awesome. I wish I could listen to HRs radio show, there isn't really a good punk show on English radio. There's Mike Davies on Radio One, who's quite good. And he's given a couple of my friends bands their first play, which is nice. I've never seen Suburbia, heard about it though. SNL political sketches are the best. Humor is one way of showing people 'the truth'.

Duffy is also so damn cute :) I love her style and her 'old soul', her voice is very Dusty Springfield-like. I love the 'throwback' voices and grooves. Seems like she stayed the course...unlike, say...um, Amy Winehouse?:p

Hmmm...you have to put mothballs in the wardrobe or chest of drawers.

For mosquitos you should try anti-mosquitos plug in which you can buy from Boots.

Yea. but what happens to the dishes that AREN'T washed? They get stacked up and the kitchen turns into a mess and gross. Ya can't find anything, or the thing you need (like a pizza cutter) is underneath a mess of plates in the sink. It's not very organized.

The Cat's Mother
September 29, 2008, 09:29 AM
In what way would it be different?

In short, Mozwa seemed a bit earnest. I got the impression that my rather irreverent take on fandom wouldn't have been welcomed, so although I registered, I never really got into the habit of visiting. I prefer the hell-hole that Solo is, but the anti-trolling measures are being handled wrong IMHO. Trolls can be very entertaining, but they need keeping in their place. I would tolerate them to a point, but if they knew that overstepping the mark got them a three-month IP ban, so they couldn't pop back up half an hour later and carry on as usual, they'd be more likely to stay within limits and continue to annoy/amuse on a manageable level.

That repeated anti-freeyourself post and the replies it spawns on the front page, however.... how that IP hasn't been banned at least semi-permanently defeats me. That page is the showroom for the whole site, forums included. What a bloody awful advert! We all know Morrissey hates this site for other reasons than for posts such as that, but anyone new to the fandom, visiting for the first time will think "Hell, I know why you can't stand this place, Morrissey!" and thus perpetuate Morrissey's claims that "So-Low" is shite.

I want to see a site that can laugh at and criticize as well as praise the object of its fandom, whilst keeping the level of abuse in check. That's how I'd do it.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - It wasn't just the caffeine that gave an Iowa woman an extra jolt after she had her morning coffee. It was also the bat she found in the filter.

The Iowa Department of Public Health says the woman reported a bat in her house but wasn't too worried about it. She turned on her automatic coffee maker before bedtime and drank her coffee the next morning.

She discovered the bat in the filter when she went to clean it that night. The woman has undergone treatment for possible rabies.

Health officials say that the bat was sent to a lab but that its brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether it had rabies.

Health officials say that the bat was sent to a lab but that its brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether it had rabies.

disclaimer: I told you guys I wasn't feeling well today.

Awww, I heard that story, but I didn't know it was from my hometown. :sweet: Come to think of it, we had a bat problem there, too--but nothing like this.

Today is Rosh Hashana a holy day for the Jewish faith. As any good Catholic would do I turned off the alarm when I got home last night and had planned on sleeping in until at least 10AM instead of getting up at 4:45 as I do every morning since everyone has the day off.

At around 5:30 AM this morning mom called to let me know that their PC died and if I could take a look at it today. Since I was up I went to take a look and it is indeed obsolete. Mom has now decided that she wants to replace the PC with a Mac. I am grumpy as I will be driving to the Mall on the middle of Long Island because she will get the educators discount if I purchase it.

What am I thinking?
I am thinking my revenge for waking me on my day off is high speed lane changing white knuckle driving on the way to the mall.

He came wandering round Hull with us in V's bright pink skinnies on Sunday. Now he's not hanging out with his rather domineering goth mate, his true colours are emerging and boy, are they bright! We came back with toxic green underpants and socks that could blind the unwary.

Also, he borrowed my red shirt recently and it's just come out of the wash. Tonight, Danny-Boy will be inducted into the family tradition of "You wear it, you iron it!"
