Having been there for a month, I can see all the other staff
and really stressed and unhappy, and now it looks like I've been
set up by the "old dear" that I work with. I'm trying to maintain

saying there was a white film all over the furniture in the living
room. I know I cleaned it all properly. Not only that I have to work
extra time and she doesn't pay me for it...
I'm really pissed off. Pfffft.......

Well the author, Elizabeth Smart, wrote it about an affair she had with a married poet called George Baker. Basically, the protagonist lusts after the man and begins an affair with him (under the nose of his wife, no less). They are stopped by the authorities when leaving for Arizona and cautioned for fornication; he then appears to go to jail for a while (or a hospital, or even both; the prose about 'rubber floors' is so bloody confusing I am never sure which), before eventually returning to his wife and leaving the protagonist miserable and with a number of illegitimate children. It's a very simple concept stretched to a little over 100 pages, and riddled with so many obscure similies and extended metaphors that at times it felt like I was reading it in a different language.

Maybe I'm just too stupid to understand it properly. Either way it feels like a waste of £10. I will re-visit it again in a year's time maybe.

It's not a read-this-or-get-shot list, but they have "Recommended Fiction / Drama" sections etc and for your Uni personal statement you have to talk about books/plays/poetry you've read, why you liked it etc.

That's a tough one. Have you read The Odyssey? It helps. If you haven't, at least look up the general plot outline and major characters, because pretty much everything and everyone has a parallel in Ulysses. You may also want to look for Stuart Gilbert's James Joyce's Ulysses (http://www.amazon.com/James-Joyces-Ulysses-Stuart-Gilbert/dp/0394700139); it's a great companion guide.

I read it once when I was your age, and didn't know anything about the background. I read it again a few years later, and it made much more sense.

Also listen to Kate Bush's "The Sensual World;" it's the final chapter of Ulysses in song form, kinda.
