So you tried a little friendly persuasion on a ignorant Carpet Manager did you. Yes I can see the benefits of making up and coming Morrissey fans listen to inferior versions of his material, with the proviso "This is not how to sing the great mans' works". Personally, I would have offered him a tape with the real thing, a best of... or Your Arsenal to play over the Tannoy. Why put up with inferior imitations. Although I fear that the less knowledged in these matters (ie the regular punters of Carpet shops, in their Carpet slippers) may feel insecure amongst the Shagpile or Wilton, while listening to the strains of Jack the Ripper or Disappointed or even Glamerous Glue.
But those are less understanding or fortunate than us, are they not.
