I found my cat sleeping among my daughter's stuffed animals.

Made me think of that scene in "E.T." :)

Oh, there's a picture on my windowsill of my old cat Smokey amongst cuddly toys as a kitten.

Poor Lulu had her teeth done on Monday :( she was lucky and didn't have to have any removed, but had a very good descale and polish. She had to have a general anastetic, and is still not quite herself. She savaged me this morning when she had to go back for a check up, and attacked a dog who was stupid enough to shove his face too near her cage, so she must be feeling a bit better :D For any cats with dental problems, my vet reccomended a special toothpaste you can put on their paw, when they lick it off, it cleans their teeth. Can't remember what it's called, but we're getting some!

me too! She's not got her voice back properly, she sounds so funny at the moment! She's certainly better than she was yesterday, but she's not quite herself yet. Wish I'd written down what the toothpaste was called, I can't remember, and I didn't get it today because it was £10 and I suspected I could get it cheaper elsewhere!

just ring the vet and ask them what it is called. I bet you can get it cheaper else where. Vet's are too expensive for the most part.

I have very sad news that is in fact over 3 months old now. I’ve been too preoccupied to speak up much in the meantime, but the year is almost over and I can’t finish 2008 without saying that my little Tonkinese cat died in September. She was approaching 20.
Following is an e-mail I sent someone the day after:
(September 21, 2008)
Our baby girl died here at home last night. We knew it would happen
yesterday, so I stayed home from work. SO glad I did, because she passed
before I would have gotten back. I put her on the bed and played music
for her and tried to comfort her the best I could...she didn't seem to be
in distress until the last hour and during the actual dying part when she
struggled to breathe for a while. I turned around to fast-forward to the
next song and listened for a minute; when I turned around again she
wasn't breathing anymore and just looked like she had curled up for a
nap. I couldn't believe that after everything, she just...stopped - like
a watch. Just suddenly an "empty" cat. Very strange and lonely.
We're having her buried in a cemetery that happens to be near where my
Mom's parents lived at the time Shadow was born. And it's not terribly
far from where Shadow and my brother and I were born. So she is returning
to somewhat familiar territory I think. The last name of the vet who started the cemetery is one letter different than my mom’s maiden name. The people running the place have been very kind, and their little girl wants to see Shadow and pet her and pray for her. Fine with me. We gave them some pictures of people and places she was close to that can be buried with her. It'll take place tomorrow (on the first day of fall), but I can't be there. But we got to say our goodbyes.
And now life goes on for the rest of us. Ridiculous. Btw, it's costing a fortune, but it's less $ than a human burial and she definitely earned a proper burial with recognition. Even my tough ol' dad is on board, but he and I were the ones who got her as a kitten in 1988, so she is Daddy's girl too.
She was very complicated and smart and hilarious and sassy and sweet. She
was awesome and I miss her like crazy.

My father and I got her from breeders (would never do that now) after our previous kitten was killed by a motorist (“missing”, as far as I knew, for over 19 years until my dad finally told me on Father’s Day). She was the only kitten from the litter who hadn’t found a home yet; she was the runt and one of her eyes was injured. It never healed, but didn’t seem to cause her too much trouble – just wept and couldn’t see as well as the other one, I’m sure. At any rate, she fell asleep in my lap and that was that – we took her home.

Various family members moved various places over the years, with her and without her, but she lived with my mother throughout (and with me for all but one year).
She developed periodontal disease fairly early in life and only had a few teeth left, but she swallowed dry food whole for a long time before finally deciding she enjoyed wet food as well. It wasn’t until a few years ago that we thought there might be something truly wrong with her - she vomited often and had begun to have seizures. The vet said she had kidney disease and probably epilepsy – rare in cats, and that we could give her fluid injections from time to time if we wished, but that’s about all.
So we really did nothing special for her except take her in again to a new vet this year after returning from a trip to Europe of all decadent things (for a family wedding), during which time she’d had another seizure at the sitter’s and gone blind – which we didn’t realize until we got her home from said sitter’s, because she had used her last days of sight to memorize the layout of the woman’s apartment but was thrown for a loop when we plopped her back in ours! By then, her kidneys were functioning at a severely diminished capacity and she became extremely weak during her final weak, to the point that she was immobile the last several days and we had to lay pads under her and hold food and water up to her face. We took her in to see the vet again, hoping it was just anemia (read: treatable), but it was the end. He said she’d be gone before the weekend was over. (It was Friday). When she could still scoot around, she tried repeatedly to burrow under the table one day, which had presumably been her instinct to “curl up and die”. He asked if we wanted to take her home and wait for nature to take its course or put her down then and there; we weren’t ready to do that, not even at that point. I honestly didn’t feel she was ready for it either – she couldn’t walk, but she was very alert on the walk there and back - turning her head toward every sound - and it was a warm day ideal for a last walk in the world. She had even continued to nibble her grass outside when she could barely move anymore (with me propping her up to reach it), and she ate until the day before she died and drank the day of. I don’t think she was ever heavier than 7 lbs, but she was only 4.5 the day before she died. Her temperature was still normal. She didn’t even look…different…until the wee hours of the morning when I went to check on her in bed with my mother and her little ears were upright and stiff and she was breathing but didn’t stir when I approached. That was when I knew Saturday was the day. Her little body gave out at about 7:17 p.m.
I know I shouldn’t kick myself too much for not doing everything possible along the way, but I really wish we’d done something more and known more sooner. I wish we’d gone to the last vet before the previous one, if nothing else (more experienced, less corporate). I can’t think about her without crying, but I’m relieved that pain can’t touch her now. I will always remember her quirky ways and that supernaturally loud meow that I have tricked myself into hearing several times since September.
Incidentally, she died one week before my birthday and about 2 months before hers. This is a tad preachy, but please do your cats a favor and feed them wet food daily, because they truly can’t get enough hydration from drinking. [I recently also read that rabies vaccine injections can trigger kidney inflammation that sets the stage for chronic renal failure due to the formation of auto-antibodies; she got her rabies vaccine in her first year and as an indoor cat she sure as hell stood less of a chance of dying from rabies than from an “old-age” illness.]
Oh – and I played her mostly Enya because she’s soothing in general and also familiar to kitty ears in my household, but you can bet Morrissey was in the mix as well. ;_ )

I'm assuming it's from her spay. But I'm really not sure, as I got her as an adult. The vet said it's from the spay and that sometimes the fur doesn't grow back, but usually that is the case only with dogs.:)

Um help???

I am watching my boyfriend's cat while he is away and I don't know too much about cats still. The cat threw up though. I think it was because monday night I had someone else stop by to feed him as I was out of town for the night and the portion he gave the cat was twice what he was supposed to have.

If a cat eats twice as much as he normally would for his evening feeding, can that cause him to vomit the 24+ hours later???

He seems fine now, running around and playing like normal but still I'm worried.

I agree. lulu is the queen of unexpected/badly timed puking  it might have been he ate too fast and burped (lulu does that a lot) or maybe a hairball. If you stroke the cat, does a lot of loose fur come off? If so, a hairball is likely. Lulu doesn't get out as much as she did, which is why I'm suddenly noticing hairballs etc more than I did I think.
I'm similar to your mum, I hear the sounds of lulu retching and chase her round to a suitable place to puke pronto! Haha! (she's a cow though, she never sicks up where she's meant to!

Ok the cat keeps puking. I came home from work yesterday and there were 3 little puke piles  But like I said, he's still acting himself, doesnt seem sick at all. So I fed him his normal dinner around 6 or 6:30pm. Still seemed totally normal.

So I went to a gig last night and got home about 1am. I walked in and said hello to the cat, maybe 2 minutes later, he threw up again twice. WTF??

And he seems totally normal. Do you think he is upset and angry that his daddy hasnt been home for a week now and this is his way of showing it?

I am going to call the vet tomorrow if he pukes again tonight.

any thoughts anyone?

sounds like it could be hairballs. I know it's gross, but if he's sick again, try and have a look to see if there's any large lumps (not just cat food!) in there. If it is hairballs, it's not really serious. Otherwise, is your boyfriend contactable? Some cat are just pukey! Might be worth finding out if this is normal behaviour. It could just be he's mising his daddy though, my cat has a habit of doing things like that if I go away!

I did get a good look at the vom yesterday as I was cleaning it up so often  and there were no signs of hairballs. He doens't shed that much anyway and he has short hair. It almost looks like the food isn't even digested. As in full pieces of his dry food and the wet food that looks just the same as when I put it in his dish. I just thought it was strange if I fed him at 6pm and he didn't vomit until 7 hours later when I just happened to come home 2 minutes prior to the vomiting...seems strange. Either way I think I'll call the vet and at least explain and see what they say.

edit: Oh and no sadly my bf is not reachable by phone until Sunday. Boo

or did for a while, my cat has real short hair, so i dont think he needs to do that very often...

yeah, maybe to be on the safe side. As Robby says though, hairballs arn't really ball shaped at all  Like I say, cats can just be pukey, but if it's undigested several hours later, might be worth going to a vet.

Sometimes cats will eat so quickly that they vomit afterward. One of mine does that regularly. He's the tubby one and if the food bowl is empty for five minutes longer than he thinks it needs to be, he'll wolf down everything in the bowl in two seconds and then vomit it back up.

The only things I would be worried about would be dehydration and a possible obstruction. Is he using the litter box okay?

My older neighbor - a real character - called me last week with some cat news (I sometimes cat-sit her 2 kitties).

Recently, she and her husband bought the cats some organic catnip when they visited their daughter in California.

When they came home and gave the cats a whiff she said they "went on a bad trip." Normally they just act all chill and goofy on the stuff, but this batch made them vicious and they attacked each other. One cat was so badly scratched she had to take him to the vet and it cost them $400 to get the poor thing stitched up.

Be careful with the organic stuff!

You don't want your cats trippin......

Yay! Bigger flat! :D

When I bring a new kitty home, I usually keep it separated from the other kitties for a day or so, then have supervised playtime. That seems to work well. :)

We have a new kitten in the house, yay. I was so not prepared for all the work that kittens are. All the cats I've had have been adults. She is about 6 months old, we got her at the local shelter. So far, she and the other two kitties haven't been getting along too well. They have only had one or two supervised visits though. They alternate who has the run of the house. New kitty, her name is Misty, has an e collar because she kept messing with her stitches from her spaying and ended up ripping them out. So she got new stitches and stuff over the weekend at the emergency vet. So, she has the e collar for the next 10-12 days. Maybe when that is gone, we will let her meet the other two kitties for a longer period of time. I will post pictures later. She is a sweetie, she's a Russian Blue.

Caught new kitty licking at her stitches this morning! Bad kitty. Going to have to keep a very close eye on her now. Don't know how she got to them even with the e collar. Any tips to keep her away from them? The collar is snug so, I guess she is just flexible enough to get to her tummy. Ah, kittens.

Thanks for the tip! When we got Lulu, I was living with a couple who had an older cat and we used that method. I think it was easier because she was only a kitten and easily bossed about, but still willing to stuck up for herself. Might be harder with a grown up cat!

Oh dear :( Lulu was similar, she pulled out her stiches and managed to remove her e coller by wedging her head in a very small space  maybe try repositioning the collar? (I'm sure you've tried that!) otherwise, you can get this yukky tasting stuff which is non toxic to spray on them. Lulu had to have that because she sucked her tail (she's odd) but as it's a fresh wound, check with the vet first. It's a bit mean I know, but it's for her own good!

I think the new kitten, Misty, is teh dumb. Brownie, who is almost 18 lbs, hisses at her and then she runs toward him. He goes in the next room after hissing, and she goes after him. She jumps on the couch and gets all in his face with her e-collar. I know she is a kitten, but geez, I thought it would be instinctive to stay away from another cat hissing at you. Especially when he is twice your size!

okay, so I have a question about my cat.

she's acting really odd lately.

As in, she won't eat, unless I sit down next to her and watch her eat. My dad says its because she thinks I'm another cat (and that's what wild cats do in the wild, one eats and one watches.). whatever the cause is, I'm worried that she won't...eat if I'm not here. (that and i really don't feel like watching my cat eat everytime she does.)
She follows me around, meowing at me until I finally give up and and watch her eat. It's driving me crazy.

Any ideas on how to get her to stop? or what might be causing this? It's freaking me out and also slightly annoying me. I love my cat to death, but sometimes, she drives me crazy.

i have a question-any of you have cats who watch things you can't see? I have two that
do it, they are both watching the same thing, but nothing's there. maybe they're seeing
ghosts. strange.

They all do that. It's because they're like The Borg and all part of a large kitteh collective that exists for the sole purpose of fucking with hoomans.

Seriously they are the cutest things ever. Their tiny ears make their heads look like helmets and their eyes are just starting to open so they really can't see much of anything. And their little meows are so adorable. I wanted to put one in my purse and take it with me but that's just wrong.

You know how when it's early in the morning and the cat comes and wakes up and and is purring and head butts you and just wants some love and to be fed? We all know that happens right?

Does your cat ever try to suck on your nose or ear lobes even? Like a baby who wants their mom? Just curious if this is common or not.

Not sure how common it is but my sister's cats do similar things. Apart from the smooching and purring they nibble on her chin and nose and apparently they've tried to open her eyes from time to time :lbf:.

I feel the same way about cats, especially ours, of course. They've come to be much more than just animals or even 'pets.' They sometimes seem to be little furry humans that don't say much and happen to scratch around in the litter box. :) My life would be a less happy place without them.

Cute kitty Draize, what's her name?

The_Draize_Train
April 18, 2009, 06:03 AM
she isn't mine -
this one was though - mrs. maya (she passed away) but she was hands down the coolest cat ever - this cat, if she saw me way down at the other end of the street, would come running to me, meowing all the while. She did that all the time- people used to laugh at me because of it ;)

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww156/pink_moon_drake/Moz_Solo/maya-4.jpg

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww156/pink_moon_drake/Moz_Solo/Maya_and_monster.jpg

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww156/pink_moon_drake/Moz_Solo/Mrs_maya_in_fruitbowl1.jpg

This cat - softee, I had her more recently but I had to give her away when I moved to california last year - she had a different personality than mrs. maya, but she was extremely sweet in her own way :) I made sure I gave her to a good home - the couple had a little girl that wanted her and would take care of her, so I felt ok about it.

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww156/pink_moon_drake/Moz_Solo/softee.jpg

Towards the end of her life, I think mrs maya had something wrong with her - she had a single little kitten, but it's like she wouldn't take care of it - I don't know what was wrong. The little kitten had fleas, and I had to do something about it - so I tried my best to dab some warm water on it with a cloth and apply a little bit of flea replellent, then I dried it off by standing well away from it with a hair dryer - it took forever to get it dried like that, but I couldn't leave it damp. Then I let it sleep with me that night. But mrs maya still just wasn't taking care of it - and a few days later, I looked in her box, and she had died. I buried her out back at the house I was living in. That will always bother me for some reason. Anyway, it's in the past now

Catwalk: Feline follows owner on nightly excursions

Many Livonia residents walk their dogs.

But Lisa McLeod walks her cat — without a leash.

The black and white-spotted feline follows McLeod all around their Hix-Schoolcraft neighborhood. If a dog being walked on a leash is about to pass by on the sidewalk, McLeod warns Kiewie and she lies down on a driveway, out of the dog's reach.

“People cannot believe I'm walking my cat,” she said of the looks she gets from neighbors and passersby.

Next-door neighbor Dave Thomas said he and his wife, Sue, get a kick out of watching Kiewie follow McLeod. “It's pretty funny,” Thomas said.

Thomas said the cat looks both ways before crossing the street, turning her head left and right. “It's really something,” he said.

Kiewie also protects McLeod's younger cat, Tiger, from cars. One day Tiger got too close to the road and Kiewie ran after her and chased her back to the house, McLeod said.

McLeod's sister, Jackie Schwalm of Milford, e-mailed the Observer about Kiewie.

She said the cat seems to understand what her sister is saying.

“Once a family was leaving their house in their car and the mother asked my sister, ‘Are you walking your cat?'” she said. “My sister said yes. Then her children in the car started barking and my sister looked at her cat and said, “It's OK. They are only joking,” and the cat looked at my sister and proceeded to walk by the car.”

McLeod said the cat, a 9- or 10-year-old stray they took in years ago while living in Redford, started walking with her last summer.

McLeod had stopped smoking and started walking. The cat began to follow her and each time, she would take it a couple houses farther.

“Now she walks anywhere I go,” she said.

You just know that tiger is thinking "Damn this glass! I wants to eat me some tasty young baby!"

Lovely tiger. I like it's soft coloring.

Well, my neighbors dropped 5 kittens off on my porch today! They are the younger siblings of my cats and another litter I rescued around Christmas. They said they were going to make their cat an inside cat and get her spayed! I gave them the info for the low-cost spay/neuter clinic today, but who knows if they'll take advantage of it. This disgusts me. I already have 5 rescued cats, three of which come from that household!

I'm so sorry about your Shadow. I will definately kiss and hug my Shadow while thinking about yours. I love the stray white hairs too. Sometime I will hold on to one while Shadow isn't looking and gently tug and I get such a look from him. Ha! :lbf: BTW he fetches. He loves his toy mousies!
