Flashpapr - "Do What You Must Do"

Flashpapr - "Do What You Must Do"
AMG Rating: 4.5/5.0
Release Date: 1999
Label: Westside Audio Laboratories
Time: 37:45
Genre: Rock
Styles: Sadcore, Lo-Fi

"Experiencing Do What You Must Do is similar to looking through an old forgotten box of letters and pictures on a rainy day. Memories and hopes that are simultaneously beautiful and frail soak through your skin as the disc plays onward. Stand-up bass and violin give Flashpapr's deconstructed would-be jangle-rock a timeless, classic feel like a black and white photograph. Understated guitar and vocals cut right through to the heart of the matter. Computerized loops and samples add a grainy, hazy texture to the mix; voices, sounds, and thoughts collide, making everyone and everything feel close and far all at once. Taken as a whole, Do What You Must Do is an enveloping, draining affair that transcends any easy categories such as "indie" or "emo." Flashpapr will make you sad for the greatest nights of your life but leave you wishing for more. The song "White Flowers" might be among the most perfect bittersweet-romantic narratives ever written — reflective, sincere, and poetic, immersed in both triumph and failure, much like the collective album."

"You Should be at Home Here" [yousendit]

And here is a transcription of the lyrics (the lyrics in the liner notes are purposely scribbled-out!):

You Should Be at Home Here

01. Brooke Daniel's Tiny Broken Fingers

If you were here right now
not dead like you are
i would sit by you, but you're not here,
you're not here at all
tiny broken fingers in the doorway
how was i to know?
guess i didn't think those screams were for real
in a house where the tree fell
we spent all day in the branches
they came the next day
they took that tree away and made me cry
did you hear she saw demons in the bedroom
her lungs were broken
but then they worked fine
blue light comes around
blue light dont come around right now
you might not like what you see, be ashamed

02. The Color That Your Eyes Changed With The Color Of Your Hair

seal this envelope with a heart thats been
beaten black beaten blue
beaten all over again
don't leave out a single thing
send it off with wings
an anecdote to ease the pain that you feel
every time that you smile at the mirror
i wont need anymore memories
for the next 50 years i could still write you love songs
i wont need anymore photographs
to remember the color of the clothes you wore that night
hopefully this wont sound as bad
as im sure that it is
all results will be lifeless and lead
to an excuse
to never try again, to never try at all
staring up at the ground
because oh how you we tried
and oh how you lied
but how could that be true
i wont need anymore memories
for the next 50 years i could still write you love songs
i wont need anymore photographs
to remember the color that your eyes changed with the color of your hair
my heart is gone
my heart is gray

03. Halfway Spoken Heart That Feels Comfort In Everything Until It Disappears And Then Its Gone

hoping that the warmth of snow
will bring some comfort with its gray
false light will glow from the lamp
i will shade to hide the glare from your pale face
until it disappears and then its gone
sit so quiet, breathe so softly
waiting for the walls to creak
so you can finally let out a sigh
a breath that will illuminate the cell
and all of its shapes inside
the cold air
in the cold air

04. A Loose Hair Falls Into A Glass Of Water Without Ice

if this is all part of some plan
if this is all part of some game
if this is some self affirming notion
if this is all exactly what i think it is
our phobias are the only conversation
i dont want to say anything right now
smoke gets in your eyes
and loose hairs fall into a glass of water without ice
it's giving you a stomachache
which comes as no surprise when you say that your head is throbbing
or how tired that you are
now loneliness has turned into a desperate thing
i dont want to think about that now

05. Fear Not My Friend For Tonight We Ride

instrumental

06. Blessed Arms That Hold You Tight, Freezing Cold And Alone

a doorway that's in between
wasn't me and it wasn't you
the airplane rewrote our histories
of freeways left to go now
hysteric screams coming out of the window now
blessed arms that hold us tight
freezing cold and alone
skeleton left the closet for a little while
i slept all through the day
all through the night
all through this year
all through this life
now cold arms pull the covers tight
and bad boring dreams all come true
and its all long goodbyes
death will come slowly now
wake up, pass out, fall down
comb your hair
take a long long look in the mirror
you smiled when you lied about all of your feelings
i hope to god none of this comes true
because one eyes is shut
and the other one is completely crushed
death will come slowly for you

07. All Apologies And Smiles, Yours Truly, Ugly Valentine

so their all gone now
that took a long time
you're the only one
who'd be my valentine
i didnt want that
to drive you crazy
i should've done something
i guess im lazy
feeling down low now
someone tell me what i should do
because i've never been perfect
but i never meant to drag down you so
if im dragging you down now
i could wait in the lost and found
just promise me you'll be perfect
and i promise that i'll come around sometimes
to say hello all smiles
maybe its time to let go
probably doesnt even weigh that much now
so i'll drop it
i'll turn around fast
i'll shake your hand and take
six steps back
we'll have a seat and light another cigarette
we'll have a drink for nothing to regret
we'll clap our hands when, when we hear that sound
we won't be sad now
we won't be feeling down
we could live or die
and have a great time
i'll be your valentine
what an ugly valentine
we could live or die
and have a great time
you'll be my valentine
what a perfect valentine
we could live and die be my valentine

08. The Ghost Of A Dead Hummingbird Flying Around The Room

sold a penny to the railroad
nothing gained and nothing lost
kept it underneath the pillow
and sent it out to you for your thought
will you hold it close to your heart
or will you lose it the same day
will you through it in the well
to gently wish me away
do you really want me here
do you really want me to stay
do you really want me gone
do you really want to wish me away
the television glow will keep you
safe and warm when you're alone
and yuo won't be frightened by
ghosts of birds that fly around the room
and terrorize you flying
im wide awake now
your sound asleep now
and these valiums are finally kicking in
i can feel it under my skin
i can feel your breath on my breath
i can feel your heart on my arm
i can see the glow in the room
i can see the hummingbird fly away
now i can feel your weight in my arms
i can feel this weight on my heart
do you really want me to stay
do you really want me to go away
im wide awake now
you're sound asleep now

09. The Part About The Vine That's Growing Through The Window And Reaching Towards My Bed

read all the words upon the note
that you handed me so insincerely
what did you expect for me to say
when you had to ask how it made me feel
your handwriting was perfect
you spelled everything correctly
except for one small tiny thing
that i wouldn't mention anyways
so now by candlelight in my new bedroom
thats in the basement under the stairs
im writing you a letter 200 miles away
hope that it will reach you
some parts of it sound foolish
like the part about the vine
thats growing through the window
and reaching towards my bed
hope one night while i'm asleep
that vine will wrap all around me
to come and take me away

10. You Should Be At Home Here

if i could feel anything
it wouldn't feel at all like this
if i could wake anywhere
i wouldn't wake up at home
if i could hear anything
it would be your voice to say
you should be you should be at home here now
i dont feel at home at all
this is where i will sit
to pay for all the wrong i've done
this is where i will sleep
to pay for all the wrong i've done
this is where i will wake
to pay for all the wrong i've done
this is where i will think
about all the wrong i've done
hope your funeral goes as planned
and everyone falls all around you
bringing flowers to make a pillow
for your weary head
i wont be there when you scream
at all the voices all around you
saying the things you never ever want to hear about
i wont be there when you die
a thousand deaths for just one lie
it's amazing how you stay awake at all
i'll be waiting way down here
and i'll be waiting all alone
waiting for you waiting for you
all the rats and spiders
will probably leave me here alone
just like everyone they've got something better
that they can do
everything that was to be
forgotten us and will be gone
everyone that was to be
now somehow all became a memory

This was uploaded a while ago on yousendit on a message board. I wouldn't necessarily say that this is a favorite of mine, but I didn't mind having it on as good background music in my car while chatting with my bros.

Here are the Charlatans UK "Simpatico"

Can anyone tell me what most consider to be their best album?

difficult, seeing a comparison on the tour board indicating that the Charlatans dont matter at all. And honestly, I like of each album a couple of songs, but on the whole, an entire album is never brilliant. The songs on the albums always seem to sound alike, (bit like the midtempo songs on Rott), yet each album still has its own ring. Fave of mine are Some Friendly (the first), Wonderland (bit Mick Jaggerish - and may I add: excellent for driving) and The Charlatans (from 1995)

A Different Kind Of Greatness
Idaho - Alas
Buzz Records

"All I can say is it is amazing, simply amazing......If you like bands like Low, Red House Painters and others of the same genre you will love these guys....The singer's voice may take a little while to get use to. But once you do it's as heavenly as any other. The album starts off just seeming like it is just going to be another average mopy guy singing his depressing love ballads..not the love ballads that great bands like slaughter brought to us but beautiful slow guitars in tune with your heart..I reccomend this with all the will that this man can type...."

CMJ NEW MUSIC REPORT
Idaho - Alas

"The latest offering from Los Angeles’s reigning kings of rock lethargy (now making tiny Chicago indie Buzz Records its home) may be the group’s most understated work to date. Forgoing much of the rich, four-stringed guitar interplay that marked the band’s previous releases, Alas finds Idaho mainstay Jeff Martin whittling his somber ruminations down to their barest, most fragile sonic elements, voice and electric guitar, while occasionally tempering them with additional bits of atypical instrumentation, such as violin, bassoon, synthesizer loops and a female voice. The resulting mini-album (just over a half-hour in length) maintains the same sense of stark, forlorn beauty that has become synonymous with Idaho’s work, but drapes it in slightly different shades of emotional and musical gray."

Lazarus
Songs for an Unborn Sun
Temporary Residence Ltd.

"Ever had an encounter with a person who insisted on exposing every single one of their flaws to you? Ever had to listen to someone as they droned on and on about the subtle shades of grey their depressed and one-dimensional emotional life is colored with, all the while inching closer and closer to you with a total disregard for personal space? You can smell the melancholy and woe reeking from every pore in their body like the musk of the damned. Flecks of spittle bounce from lugubrious lips and an oppressive tongue as their mouth and vocal chords hit overdrive in an attempt to spew forth every draining detail. Finally, when they are mere inches from your face, making it impossible to avert your eyes or turn your head, they tailspin into full-disclosure mode, fully recounting every pockmark and scar that adorns their twisted, shattered, smoking-wrecked-hull of a soul. You are left reeling, compassion and empathy destroyed and desperately seeking the solace of brightly umbrella-garnished alcoholic beverages with tropical sounding names and Of Montreal's The Gay Parade.

Sound like fun? Then Songs for an Unborn Sun is right up your alley. Lazarus is Trevor Montgomery (post Tarentel and The Drift) and Marty Anderson (Howard Hello, Dilute), and they have recorded one of the most quietly uncomfortable albums of 2003. The negative emotions leap from the speakers, grab your ears, and force you to listen, connect, and examine them as you hear lazily strummed guitar and woefully delivered vocals. The lyrics and music are so impregnated with antagonistic and deleterious vibes they gain a bleak consciousness of their own and somehow leave the impression that they voyeuristically enjoy the discomfort they cause the listener. Occasionally accompanied by even creepier background vocals, keyboard, and samples, these bedroom macabre songs are an exhaustive exercise in down-tempo beats and feelings.

While Montgomery and Anderson do a wondrous job of achieving their dark goals, they also manage to outdo themselves and ultimately detract from the album's effect. That's because by the end of this psychotherapeutic CD so much adverse lyricism has been thrown at the listener that it becomes a large indistinguishable mass of weepy white noise. Just like alcohol, you can build a tolerance to codependent empathy.

Just as Journey and Air Supply hold cachet amongst certain crowds, this meticulously descriptive exploration of negative emotion will probably hold cachet amongst a certain crowd. If you're one of the members of that crowd, then grab your headphones and your razor blade and pick up Songs for an Unborn Sun."

EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman.

The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before taking up the subject of mortality more fully in the anthemic "Rise," written by Eitzel for an AIDS-stricken friend. Eitzel observes the trials of those around him on "Ex-Girlfriend," but "Sick of Food" turns his gaze inward, breathlessly describing his alienation from virtually everything and his simultaneous longing for connection. His disaffection grows more urgent on "The Dead Part of You," but by the closing folky ballad "Jesus' Hands," Eitzel's delivering a plea for redemption that finds him strangely at peace with contentment's evanescence.

Spin (9/91) - Highly Recommended - "...Songwriter Mark Eitzel is a very moving singer and lyricist...this is an album to return to time and time again..."

Q (12/91) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...an everclear, blooming production which never compromises an understated, ghostly ambience... should broaden the growing fan base..."

Melody Maker (12/91) - Ranked #8 in Melody Maker's list of the top 30 albums of 1991 - "...painfully intense..."
