That's a very fair point indeed. In fact, I'm ashamed to say, I had a meeting with a work colleague the other week, and I explained that sometimes the job can make you feel like the sentiments expressed in the opening verse. Shoehorn in a reference wherever.

How did they omitt Frankly Mr Shankly?!

As Goddard put it beautifully in Songs That Saved Your Life, a true anthem for all those 9-5'ers.

HNIMN only has one work related lyric, maybe two with (why do I smile... etc.), You've Got Everything Now has as many, doesnt it? "No Ive never had a job...because ive never wanted one/because im too shy".

The Smiths and Morrissey seem to be getting more mainstream recognition these days, but its worrying the ammount of slapdash lazy generalisations are still being applied.

Meh...

Re: How did they omitt Frankly Mr Shankly?!

Songs related to work immediately bring to mind "Heaven Knows", that is the most obvious and that is the most ascerbic. That is why the general population would site it first. The general populus has never listened to any other..
frankly.
