The Rolling Stones had another monster year in 2005, as Pollstar reports that the band played the highest-grossing tour of the year. The Stones raked in $162 million with the A Bigger Bang tour while playing 42 shows in North America. U2 ranked second with $138.9 million even though they played 78 shows in North America - that's because their average ticket price was $96.92 while The Stones charged an average of $133.98.

Celine Dion's residency in Las Vegas earned her $81.3 million in 2005, as Paul McCartney and The Eagles rounded out the Top 5 with $77.3 million and $76.8 million, respectively. Despite having a huge year and playing 68 concerts, Green Day came in at #12 on Pollstar's list because the band charged a modest $38 for a ticket. Other artists that made the Top 20 list of the year's highest-grossing tours were Elton John, Dave Matthews Band, Motley Crue, Bruce Springsteen, Gwen Stefani, Coldplay and the Anger Management tour starring Eminem and 50 Cent.

Pollstar estimates that revenues for all major North American concerts increased to $3.1 billion in 2005, up from $2.8 billion in 2004. However, total tickets sold continued a downward trend while average ticket prices went up. Pollstar says the Top 100 touring artists sold a combined 36.1 million tickets in '05 as compared to 37.6 million in '04, but the average ticket price increased to a record $57, up from the previous year's $52.39.
