Gene --I love them, they write beautiful music, the song that speaks to me most is "speak to me someone" (hmmmm) but there's this one thought that invades my mind and senses everytime I see a picture of Rossiter and gang --are they Smiths wanna-bes? the typical four-piece band with a singer passionately belting out the tune with innocent hand on heart, maybe thats not so obvious. but Steve mason with his Johnny marr hair-cut, Kevin Miles' Andy rourke complexion... Rossiter's slicked back hair with mock sex-idol look on his face

When I saw Gene a few years ago on the "Olympian" tour, I met Martin and asked him nearly that VERY question. I said "In every interview Ive read or heard it says that you say you arent like the Smiths, but how can you actually deny it after the show Ive just seen? You dress just as concervatively as Moz, you dance like him, you whip the microphone cord about while singing like him, and for Gods sake, you stuck your tounge out five times and collapsed on the monitor...exactly as he does in his shows! " his reply?.."I dont know what youre talking about...We've never even heard of them."

Amazing though how his utter denial could bring about so much more passion in me. I just got SO angry!..I mean its obviously a ploy, how could it not be? but to outright LIE to a fan in the face...its a terrible thing to do. ...But like..is it some genious plan from their management? Like, "your sily git fans will invest much more time into proving you wrong, and it will take up their thoughts and they will listen to your album more, therin, their friends will hear it and more people will like you, and by the time you go back to that town, your crowd/fan base will have tripled!"...That seems to be whats happenned.

I love that band...but gosh....I think there is certainly something sinister in that.

A lot of things lately are really...wrong. Like..Nothing is as it appears...at one point in time, a person could realy on their vision to proove something, but now...even if you see it, no one beleives it...Like This whole thing with the President, I mean.."No, I did'nt have SEX, it was simply an immorall act"......Its like "ITS CALLED ORAL SEX YOU MANIPULATIVE LITTLE @#!!!!" and like.....on Party of Five this week, Ned hit Juslia and when confronted he saus "No. I did'nt hit you, I just went to grab you and when you pulled away, you fell"...Ive been in that situation and then you feel like..."Am I wrong? I saw that, I was there, I know what happenned, but am I crazy?"............Its all different lately. And Its similar to this whole Gene Thing....Are they Exactly like THE SMITHS? "No, We've never even heard of them".....

HOW CAN YU BE AN ENGLISH MUSICIAN IN ENGLAND AND NOT KNOW WHO THE @#!!!ING SMITHS ARE WHEN E VERYONE TELLS YOU YOU ARE Exactly LIKE THEM??? Wouldnt an entire life of comparissons just give you an inkling of an idea to pick up a copy and hear it??? Or see a video? Why is my musician that I love Lieing to me?

I think Hope might be dead as well...Human emotion could be,,dead...and since all of it is an idea anyway, perhaps it never existed. Maybey it depends on how strong you imagination is? And since children are not allowed to have an imagination much anymore, they are too busy trying to figure out flash card equasions, that is why Emotions have become invalid? They have faded out like a trend? Well the importance has faded out anyway.

Shouldnt I be having this conversation at a coffee shop over a mocha or something?

In an article a few years back in one of those British music magazines, our Martin Rossiter not only acknowledged the existance of the Smiths but he also cited them as one of his favorite bands when he was growing up!
I can't remember exactly what was said but I do have the article here stuffed away somewhere so if someone insists I'm full of bull I'll gladly dish it out and quote it!

As a youngster, Rossiter posed as a Rough Trade distributor or whatever to find out whether the band had actually broken up in 87. He was quite the fan and everyone knows it. He's just having a little bit of fun with a question he's been asked a million times.

Well, I never thought I'd find myself making a post in the midst of a Gene string, least of all one in defence. It may well be self defence. I'm a afraid that we English are ironic constantly. I spend an evening in the pub a couple of weeks ago playing a drinking game; if you said something that WASN'T ironic you had a shot of tequila. Needless to say we all went home sober. So Brutalful, I really don't think you should feel let down Martin, he probably can't help himself. I was trained to be ironic before potty training.

As for Gene, I can't allow myself to accept that they really exist. I treat them as an exceptional covers band who play songs The Smiths didn't get around to recording. Of course, that means I can't wait for the next album and no, I'm not actually being sarcastic though it can be a struggle.

I think he was just giving you a flip answer because you were so rude to him and insulted his show/music/band. He's always been cool to me. you should all learn that morrissey is not the only person who likes to go the "tongue-in-cheek" route. perhaps martin rossiter and so many others do not implement this little device as successfully, but i can not believe that irony can be completely lost on so many of you time and time again. speaking as someone who used to know martin many many years ago (when, incidentally, he was no more than a grossly overweight, young, desperate moz-wannabe who had not yet even managed to develop his voice adequately enough for a band), i can assure you all that the smiths have played a larger part in his existence than he would care to admit (publicly, at least).
