What does this song mean? Is the phrase "swallow on my neck" British or something because I have no clue what it means. Maybe I just haven't thought enough about it. Please help.

Screwed, blued and tattooed (heheheheh) - that's what always came to MY mind.
All you subtext detectives, clue us in, PLEASE!

I always thought it meant he couldn't hang out with the guys on Valhalla Road anymore because they spotted a hickie on his neck from Jake.

I'd say that's a pretty fair interpretation, but take a look at the little bird drawn on Morrissey's hand on the back of "Vauxhall" and tell me if that's not close enough to being a swallow...sure this song's about Jake...and their little affair. "Soon everyone knew"? Well, obviously not his some his closet homophobe fans, the legion of the clueless. Jake wasn't much of a looker anyway, and he was too short...

That would be my guess as well. The swallow sounds like a sign, of love, ownership, what have you. And I think it's pretty clearly autobiographical.

Tattooing a swallow on ones neck is a very traditional in the rockabilly scene. Members of Rancid and Stray Cats have swallows on their neck. It goes along with the rockabilly iconography like dice, the number 13, playing cards etc.

I thought i had posted that swallows on necks were traditional type tattoos guess it didn't go through.. but there is more behind them then just having to have them to be in a scene.. You would either have to ask someone that knows what they mean ..like a tattoo a tattoo artist. thats into that sorta stuff or some one who knows thier history about tattoos They usually have superstiton behind them .. theres one that saliors get on the tops of thier feet that suppose to be lucky and not let the ship sink and if it does then they wont drown type thing.I have never gotten to deep into trad tattoos so I couldn't tell you the meaning or what they signify.
