For once, I agree with something Bush has done. Though I do think since he's against affirmative action at the university level, he damned well better do away with legacy points next.
Affirmative action is the worst of the two, IMO, because it promotes bad things on either side of the "racial spectrum." At least legacy points are just ways that universities ensure they'll have continued alumnus support. The affirmative action sh*t encourages "minority" students to hold themselves to lower standards, and discourages "white" students from working hard in the first place for fear of not getting in to a school anyway, or they become discouraged once they are denied after having worked incredibly hard their entire lives.
Giving breaks at the university level is not what we need, anyhow. What we need is better early education, especially considering that we are such f**king morons (as a nation, I in no way consider myself nor many of you Americans here morons) compared to other nations.
Anyway. There was a debate on Hannity and Colmes tonight, and I agree with the pro-what Bush has done-statements which were made. Affirmative action will fix nothing; it's just a pretty way of saying "reverse discrimination." Why make it harder or easier for anyone to do anything, today, on the basis of things in the past which are not faults of our own? That's not the real way to root out the lingering problems of social inequality, and by allowing people to hold themselves to lower standards we are just promoting the very thing which made bleeding-hearts advocates of such things as affirmative action in the first place.
Though this is just one small effort, and really only pertains to a specific place, it was a good decision.
F**k. I didn't think I'd say that at any point during this administration. Oh boy.
