Mindy, didn't you post a message like two weeks ago saying you heard Belle & Sebastian for the first time? And that quickly they make your Top 10? Or do I have you confused with somebody else?
Mindy

i was grasping at straws. there are only so many bands that i like and that i have enough albums of to form a fair opinion (i have three b&s ones). mind you, it took the smiths about 30 seconds to become my favorite band. in any case, my list changes daily. if i were to make the list today, i'd probably take off r.e.m. and add the beatles or something.

Gen is the only other band I do listen to on a regular basis. I love his writing and how he uses his gorgeous voice. They are even better live, I think, than on any cd.
I also like Suede, Pulp, and Belle & Sebastian. I listen to them once in a great while. And I can listen to and enjoy Tom Waits, Ani Difranco, The Cure, REM, U2, The Sheila Divine, and Counting Crows, but I would never put on a cd and listen to them myself. I see no point in listening to anything I don't love, no matter how "good" it is by musician standards or ability. I can listen to the radio while I am working or driving because I am not concentrating on it, it's all just background noise. When i really want to concentrate on music, it's only Moz (more so than The Smiths) or Gene that will do.
Call me narrowminded, it's my truth.

robert smith once remarked "if morrissey says don't eat meat, i'll eat meat because i hate morrissey."
what does he know? he's just a funny little man in a fright wig with crimson lippie. that being said, i liked the cure before i was even really conscious of the smiths, and i still sort of like them. fave song of theirs: killing an arab (i have a weakness for camus).

Good someone I can ask this question: There was one good song that the local college radio played by Aztec Camera around 1988/89. So a few months ago I found that album...er I mean CD used and listened to it again. It sucked, except MAYBE for that one song that was popular. Now I haven't heard anything of theirs recent...did they get any better?

Gee, Oaf I don't see your top ten on here (for us to make snide comments about).

well roddy frame (the main man behind aztec camera) hasn't released an a.c. album since 1995 (apart from a best of collection and a reissue of the two albums on one cd). i haven't listened to every album, but from the ones i have listened to, i have to say that a.c. is definitely an acquired taste. some of the songs make me think "what the fuck?!" but i love the song "good morning, britain" from 1990's "stray." however, a.c.'s best album is probably the first: "high land, hard rain."

I wasn't deriding Mindy's list.
It's true I don't understand how Belle & Sebastian can make like half of the Top 10 lists I see here. I mean, are they really better than, say, Jimi Hendrix? Bob Marley? I dunno. I guess it's just lists of personal faves and that's fine. And yes I guess I'll put mine together later today, as if anyone cares.

I guess you're right. There are some bands that I've felt instantly became my faves when I first heard them.
The Smiths weren't one of them for me, though. The Smiths and Morrissey grew on me very gradually over about a one year length of time. The first time I heard the guy I completely mocked him! But now he's probably forever my all-time fave singer.

well the first smiths album i bought was singles and as soon as i heard morrissey's voice on "hand in glove," i was hooked. i dunno, i'm prone to that sort of thing. the smashing pumpkins instantly became my favorite band when i heard "tonight, tonight" for the first time when i was a kid. guess i'm weird.

Robert Smith is totally cutting edge. You couldn't find that lipcolor for the longest time, unless you bought the cheap knockoff in cover girl or maybelline.

Ahhh...'Halloween'. I have a soft-spot for that song. So good!
The video for 'Over the Shoulder' is really cool. It starts off with these teenagers hotwiring a car and then you see Al with spikey weird orange red hair, cruising through the grocery store stealing everything in site. It's wacky.
The only reason I did see that video is because here in Canada, back in the 80's there was a TV show out of Toronto called Club 102 hosted by Chris Sheppard. They played awesome vids that you'd never see anywhere else. ie. Ministry, Caberet Voltaire, Jane's Addiction, etc. Unfortunately it was only on the air for 1 season I think. It was the best~!

I'm trying. It's going to be VERY expensive but I'm going to do my best. I just spoke to Ray last night.
So far I have $400.00. I've been looking at rates for flights. OUCH! I'm looking at around $600 + for round trip. Plus hotel, etc. Ray said I could stay with him but...erm. I don't know about that. LOL It's not a for sure thing yet but well see. Stranger things have happend.

I think I looked there. I'm not sure. I'll check again. I think it would be cheaper if I fly out of Buffalo, NY than from Toronto so that might be an option. Maybe then I could try Priceline??

- yes indeed... very low fares... bid waaaaaaay low (like $200 roundtrip and work your way up $15 at a time) but make sure you want to do that for sure before checking it out: the "catch" is that once you bought 'em, you got 'em- no flight changes or refunds...

OK. Ray and I spoke again last night and he talked to Elliot and apparently he can get me really cheap airfare rates. Dunno how but Ray claims he's "the expert". Yay for Elliot! The killer is the exchange rates. $250.00 US is about $385.00 CDN. OUCH.
There's no date set for the conv yet because the Pallace might not be available at that time due to renovations being done so they might have to find another place to hold it. He said he should know in the next few days and then I can have a definite date.

- hmmm... interesting..the Pallace has SOOOO much history... It was owned by Jerry Lewis originally and the executive suite still has his initials all over the place... Many many bands either coming up or going down have played there over the years... backstage in the Green Rooms you can see where many famous people shot up heroin, smoked crack, pot, snorted coke, etc...

I'm not worried. I've been talking to this girl almost every day on the phone / online for about a year now. She's fabulous! Married, 3 cats, etc. She's perfectly normal. Perhaps SHE'S the one who should be worried? I don't think anyone has every accused me of being "perfectly normal". lol
