Man U's Seattle opponent: Celtic

By Seattle Times staff

Two of Europe's best soccer clubs — Manchester United of England and Celtic of Glasgow, Scotland — will play an exhibition match July 22 at 8 p.m. on a grass field at Seahawks Stadium.

Tickets for the match, the first on a four-city U.S. tour by Manchester United, go on sale March 15. Prices have not been determined, but tickets will be available at the Seahawks Stadium ticket office or through Ticketmaster.

To accommodate the desire to play on a natural surface, First & Goal will install grass over FieldTurf, the permanent playing surface at Seahawks Stadium, a few days before the match. The grass field and the larger capacity swung the event from Safeco Field to Seahawks Stadium.

After Seattle, Manchester United heads to the Moz Angeles Coliseum on July 27 to play Club America of Mexico, to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on July 31 to face Juventus of Italy, and to Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on Aug. 3 to play FC Barcelona of Spain.

Manchester United, coached by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, has won 14 English championships and 10 Football Association Cups. It has also won the European Cup, the sport's most prestigious club competition, on two occasions, most recently in 1999 when it completed a historic triple by winning the Premier League title, the Football Association Cup and the European Cup.

The team boasts a number of world-class players, including David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Celtic, the reigning Scottish Premier League champion, has won 16 of its 19 league matches this season. It has won 38 Scottish League Championships, 31 Scottish Cups and 12 Scottish League Cups in its storied history dating to 1888.

Celtic star Henrik Larsson leads the Scottish Premier League this season with 19 goals.

British soccer star David Beckham doesn't have to go far to get an expert opinion on his ever-changing hairdos. His mother, Sandra, is a hairstylist.

"She tells me if I look silly at times, but thankfully it's not that often," he told the BBC's David Frost. "Well, in my eyes it's not that often."

Just read this on the Celtic site as well. I'm going on a long holiday next year anyway. Planned on being in halifax NS for canada day ( july 1), then head west to Vancouver, south to Seattle, and across the northern US to NYC. Total trip about 6 - 7 weeks. I'll now definitely be in Seattle for july 22 for the game.
A pub there for Celtic fans is Kells Bar at Post Alley in the pike place market.

By the way, S.T.R.Moz Fan, could you tell me the best bar(s) for us mozzites? Any info much appreciated.
Oh, and you might be a wee bit surprised when you see Celtic's green colours being much much much MUCH more in evidence than Man. United's red.

Cheers.

> I will be LOL when the Bucs win the superbowl!!! OH yes
- they are tied with with Philly and Green Bay for the best NFL record right now but do yoiu think they really have enough to win it all?

If Green Bay returns to Tampa in the NFC Championship Game- look for the Buc's Warren Sapp to get slammed hard by the entire Packer offensive linse on every play for that cheap shot he put on Chad Clifton a few weeks back... I think this is the year the Pack is back, baby!!

Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego Jan. 26, 2003

Green Bay Packers 41
