Written by proper Smiths fans with the tattoos to prove it (and one scrap of Morrissey shirt torn from him with their own 15 year old hands during the "Your Arsenal" tour). Great blog post. Looking forward to the next in your series. Strangeways is easily my favorite Smiths album.

Thank you everyone. Realitybites, the next blog should be ready to go in the next few days. We think we might tackle two similar ideas The Smiths had: their decision to use b sides as a home for some of their most brilliant songs, and their loving attention to detail (remember the little messages in the run out grooves in their vinyl?). If anyone wants to make any suggestions on other little details which helped make The Smiths special do feel free to comment here or email us at [email protected] - if not keep your eyes on www.poplifer.com

thanks!

ps realitybites - could never say any Smiths album is "easily" our favourite, but "Strangeways" is our favourite by a small margin. Never understand why it gets dismissed. Mind you, "Hatful of Hollow" and "Meat Is Murder" run it close ("The Queen Is Dead" would be fourth on our list)

I lack the language to speak about music eloquently or with great intelligence. So my defense of Strangeways comes from the heart. I feel it is the most atmospheric, emotive, and mood-rich Smiths album. I think if you don't love this album, you'll never be a die-hard Smiths fan.

3 new Smiths blogs - taking on the lyrics, the b sides and the sex

Hi all

Just to let you know that over at poplifer we've posted three new Smiths blogs in the last month or so which some of you may find interesting. Or not, it's your call, so feel free to ignore us... They follow up an earlier blog on Strangeways 25th anniversary and the legacy of The Smiths which got some nice feedback here, thank you.

Blog 2 is on the b sides and how these extraordinary treasures cemented bonds between bands and fans: http://poplifer.com/2012/10/02/the-songs-that-made-you-cry-the-smiths-and-the-art-of-the-b-side/

Blog 3 took on Morrissey's revolutionary ambiguous approach to sexuality in his lyrics, and rounded up a few of our favourite innuendos: http://poplifer.com/2012/10/06/does...ule-the-body-sorting-out-morrisseys-sex-life/

Blog 4 goes further into The Smiths and identifies the many ingredients that went into them, Morrissey's amazing ability to blend the everyday and the everlasting. It's here: http://poplifer.com/2012/10/06/does...ule-the-body-sorting-out-morrisseys-sex-life/

And there's comments on the blogs so feel free to disagree, rebuke or add your own favourites.

This is the last thread we'll ever post (yay!) - no we've changed our mind again (boo!) - good night and thank you.

Thanks realitybites! And just to keep you in the loop there is now a new blog up and it is - for us - the biggie. A celebration of Morrisseys lyrics, looking at the influences, the wit, the innuendo, the originality and the extraordinary interweaving of the everyday and the everlasting. It's one long love letter, basically, but we're also asking people to tell us what their favourite lyrics are as we only had space for a few of our favourites. It's at www.poplifer.com.

Really enjoyed reading this. A very creative, engaging, and spot-on post.

Love this: "That one of us once had an entire ten minute conversation using only Smiths lyrics – and that it was a good conversation – shows the versatility of their language, the extraordinary interweaving of the everyday and the everlasting."

10 minutes? Lightweights. Try two years http://www.morrissey-solo.com/threads/103695-conversation-using-only-morrissey-lyrics
