Morrissey on top form. Tanned and fit. He went on stage reciting verses of a poem which I cannot remember right now. His voice was great. Over than 8.000 people in a venue that could manage about 5.000. Not very energetic isntead of the first rows that were really in the mood for Moz. Pretty talkative he said to the people that the politicians are the the main cause of all the problems. Introduced the band and thanked them for being so good even under the mass attack from the mosquitos (joking for a true thing). He specially introduced Boz as Mrs Gain Attention. Before he left the stage he said : "Remember me... Remember me but... Ah! Forget my fate!.." which is a verse from the "Dido and Aeneas" opera. Sometimes the crowd was quiet (mostly from the great heat 40 c) and Moz mentioned ironically "You are being very nice tonight. So I will be nice too...". He also passed the microphone to a couple of fans. Usually silly quotes due to embarassament with Morrissey mocking and pulling his face as usual. "Shyness is nice but shyness can stop you.." a guy said with Moz asking "hmmm.. my face? shy? what?.. hmmm". The last man on microphone asked Mozzer if he had read a book that was given to him some years ago and Morrissey laughed and replied "Yes... It was boring...". Laughs from the crowd and then he gave him another book and Moz surprised said "This second one it will be better!..." shyly I think. A letter was given to him too and there was an attempt of stage invasion by a guy on front row but the Greek security was tough to let. First row was a bit far from the stage so no touching this time. Pitty. Also a quote about the Greek Marbles that should be given bak to Greece which i did not understand completely mentiong the Royal Family in this too.

please dear god will he ever change this set?? For someone with one of the greatest back catalogues in music I just can't for the life of me figure why he has stuck to pretty much the same set as last year with one or two changes. The running order seems to be the only thing that changes but it is the same 20 songs over and over and over. When I think of the amount of amazing songs Morrissey has I just can't figure why some of these songs remain in the set, I'm not talking about the hits or singles either. You can slag me all you want for saying this but you all know the set could be a thousand times better, you can literally feel the atmosphere change at the shows to bored shuffling of the feet during some of these songs when he really could just go out and kill it every night. Frustrating...

Last time that Morrissey played a House of Blues (Boston 2009) there was quite a large gap and VERY tight security. We were wanded with metal detectors upon entering. I assume it's just strict HOB policy.

And thank you for those wonderful videos, MORRIZSEY.

"Better" is such a subjective notion though. Your favourites might not be the next person's favourites. "Everyone" is surely only wishing he'd play THEIR favourites..? Personally I don't have a major problem with this set list (Athens), though I'd have hoped for Alma Matters. And as for new material, I think Art-hounds and Scandinavia are preferable to Action and People Are The Same. But that's just my personal taste and I'm sure there are as many different opinions as there are people in the audience. Odd that Sheila Take A Bow only appeared once in South America though, perhaps that'll be dusted off for Manchester?

What a great rendition of 'Maladjusted' !! New drummer was hitting the notes just right, back up singing Jessies sliding guitar ...... love it !
Why the constant yelling about song selection. Moz will always sing certain songs every concert . It's what people grew up hearing. I will always want to listen to 'How Soon is Now' because the song was so unique to me .

I could not agree more, it was one of the highlights for me in Rome. The Athens version is perfect! He can repeat it in Edinburgh I won't mind. I love the voice, the drama, (the rage?) everything in the live interpretation. A great example of a live version being very superior to a recorded version.

I have been provoked into action. I must compose an epic poem, along the lines of the ancient Greek poet Homer, to commemorate Morrissey's victorious concert in Athens. I will begin work almost immediately , pro bono publico, I must put down in words exactly what it was like moment-for-moment to have been there. I must first meditate while listening to Rossini (played with original period instruments) and gather my thoughts. Again, thank you Moz on behalf of Athens.

A friend of mine is a new fan and is going to see Morrissey with me in October. I told him what the setlist was and was was really excited.

This is how tours work for most musicians/bands. They play the same set of songs every night. There are exceptions but some bands don't change a single song or the order for an entire tour. Many bands stage a lot of visual stuff an choreograph a lot of things and even use the exact same banter every night.

At least with Morrissey you know there will be something different even if its just the things he says.

If you want to argue that he could have a better list of ~20 songs a night that is at least something that has some area for discussion.

For the most part I like the set list. I hope in October he is still playing Far Off Places, Black Cloud, Carol, Maladjusted, Still Ill and Speedway. The only song I feel strongly about seeing a change is To Give (The Reason I Live) and that is because he could be playing something he wrote that we all know and love.

I wouldn't be disappointed if he dropped Let Me Kiss You and I don't like the lyric omissions in Ouija Board, Ouija Board.

Thanks to those who posted reviews and videos. Looks like it was a wonderful show!

I think the set list is great. He's put together a fine mix of songs. Like someone else said, we grew up listening to those songs. Be grateful. He could just retire and then we wouldn't have a set list at all!

My dear friend, the concert was sold-out...which means that the Greeks (not grecians!!!!!) have payed for their tickets. The doors opened to avoid conjestion at the doors. The thing is that the choice of venue was totally mistaken, organisers should have gone for a much larger one since double the expected audience turned up! And since everytime Moz comes around in Athens there's big ateendance
So, before you make racist comments, learn first that the inhabitants of Greece are not called Grecians

5,300 capacity venue means that 5,300 people paid for their tickets. 3,700 extra people means that 3,700 people did NOT pay for their tickets. The tickets were sold out, they did not have a ticket and they nevertheless went inside. Did nobody ever tell you that "a venue is sold out" means that its capacity is full and any additional person raises security risks? Why do they think they tried to avoid conjestion at the doors? In order to instead have people pushed to death inside?

The only 'sub-text' I see here, bearing in mind that all sub-text and interpretation is in the eye of the beholder, is the same sub-text that's run throughout Morrissey's 'career' - that of popularity and competition. This statement is no different , in 'sub-text' or 'reason', from his voracious obsession with chart placings, his vocal criticism of poor record company promotion, whether that be for his Smiths singles on Rough Trade as far back as '85 or his EMI ones in the early '90s. No different from his proud vaunting of breaking the Beatles' Hollywood Bowl sell-out record in '92.

You can trace this sub-text back to the very start. His whole inferiority/superiority schtick and attendant expectation of ceaseless promotion and 'natural' success. His insanity re:chart placings is second to no-one in modern music. He's no less obsessively compelled by ticket sales, venue capacities and sell-out times. He still thinks this shit matters. Which one can see as pathetic. Or pleasingly touching. Again ~ eye of the beholder.

If this Greek statement is a surprise to you, then you clearly haven't been paying attention.

As for looking for reasons to be cheerful, I'd much rather that than...the opposite. (Especially if I were Greek.)
And after all this isn't a 'negative' site....right?

I agree, that is why I am selling my two tickets for the Manchester show. I have seen Morrissey many times and I have seen him perform many of these songs many times. There re many great songs which do not see the light of day as he continues with roughly this set.

Trouble is, I can not even sell my tickets at under face value, two weeks before the show. One show in England and it is in Manchester at a venue that holds 20,000. I think there is no call for Morrissey at the moment, it has all become a bit stale, I hate to say, but he is largely to blame. New music is not very exciting and so there is not much competition, which makes Morrissey's failure to come up with anything new of an acceptable quality worrying. The band look like the are going through the motions and Morrissey looks like he has not got another record in him.

I will predict right now that Morrissey's next record will be his worst selling ever. I am sorry to say it, but the new songs are just not good enough and the dreadful ticket sales in the UK, especially when compared to previous tours, prove it.

Many of us hate to say it, but, we know its over.

Just to follow on from your post - the U2 ZooTV tour , for example, involved very, very little in the way of changes to the set-list ( and that was a tour which traversed the globe for two years). The pre-programmed visuals/choreography/etc. point you made applied especially well to U2s tour. Now, don't get me wrong - I love a good goosestep as much as the next man but Bono marching precisely pseudo-erratically to the opening strains of "Zoo Station" for 150-odd concerts was a bit much.

I'd love to see some changes to the set list ( e.g. less "hits" ) but , like you I suppose, I don't feel overly disgruntled about the rate at which changes are made ...

Ok, let me explain my point then!
1) Organizers were foul in selecting that venue with only 5,300 capacity
2) Sold-out occured a couple of hours before Moz went on-stage, therefore no time to anounce for people to avoid heading towards the venue
3) After selling out and since many people were packed in front of entrance, organisers decided to open the doors
4) I'm not saying that was the right thing to do, after all I was inside and couldnt observe what was happening
5) My point is that the reason for this potentially dangerous overcrowding was NOT that the Greek (or grecian!) audience wanted to avoid paying the ticket. People went there to buy one, after one point there was none available and the organisers dedided to open the doors...so, the people went in.

Anyway, blame it on the organizers!
