I've been on a Downton Abbey kick lately () and I have a question about accents.
Okay, is it just me or do Mary, Edith and Sybil, the sisters, have distinctly different accents? :squiffy:
Second, I have a fascination with watching Daisy, the youngest cook in the pink stripey dress, pronounce words. I could watch her all damn day. What accent does she have. I'm tempted to say Cockney but perhaps it's actually Scottish?

I realize now I should've titled this a Downton Abbey thread.
Here's an example of two of the sisters talking after Matthew walks away.

I'd find an example of the third sister but there's seems to be this bizarre trend of putting scenes of Downton Abbey to really crappy pop music and I'm sick of slogging through it. :squiffy:
Anyway, it seems like they have different accents and if they were raised in the same upper class mansion, wouldn't they speak identical? Or am I hearing it wrong?

Maybe you are taking it a bit too serious but I agree that some series and films does make a mistake when it comes to language cause like you point out they should have the same accent if they were raised in the same place.
All I know is that at the latest swedish gay awards this tv show got a big round of applause as it was nominated as best tv show but isn't it best suited for quite overaged women?

There is no such thing as a British accent. The component countries have a myriad of accents within each. Towns within minutes of each other can have clearly definable accents.

I hardly watch ITV dramas, never bother to watch Downton Abbey.
I saw a clip on youtube, Daisy doesn't sound like Scottish.
You should compare her with Kelly Macdonald's Mary in Gosford Park who is Scottish.

Love this show. Can't help with the accents though.
