View Full Version : "in flight" new morrissey studio session

i just returned from me 'olidays in Thailand - flew on Thai airways. In the in-flight entertainment tv selection there was something called "studio sesions" which had documentary footage of various artists (mostly new acts) recording "live" versions of recent tracks in the studio setting, this episode (episode 1) included Morrrisey. Tony Visconti produced the session in Temple Lane studios (quite recently) and he was there encouraging and engineering rather than activiely producing (as the song were recorded as "live" takes) they was very brief behind the scenes footage of banter between him morrissey and the band and they played the four new songs (not art-hounds). I hadn't seen this footage anywhere else before - has anyone else heard of this or seen it?

Yup! I've heard of it, it's called "Studio in Session". I made a thread about it a few months ago but apparently nobody knew anything, there was only one reply and then it was forgotten forever. It's available to watch a few places online if you have a subscription to a certain cable channel in Canada.
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/4906/54498434.jpg
There's a link to watch it online here (http://www.rogersondemand.com/channels/super_channel/studio_in_session). And another one here (http://optiktv.telus.com/hd-studio-in-session-ep-01-2495.html) and here (https://vod.shaw.ca/details/124771/Studio_in_Session_Ep_01/). I've been hoping somebody would come around who could watch it and perhaps post it online for everyone to see, but nobody has yet... maybe this time there'll be some luck. I'm interested in seeing it, anyway.
Thanks for the info! I was wondering what he'd play on it.

they played the four new songs (not art-hounds).
Dammit. So they played "Action is My Middle Name," "People Are the Same Everywhere," "The Kid's A Looker," and "Scandinavia"?
Well, fuck.
Obviously, I'd still very much like to see it. Mild irony that only Canadians may see it at the moment
Can anyone make this available for the rest of us?

its definately worth a look - if only to watch morrissey behind the mic in the studio setting - the takes of the songs are good too (the best i've seen) particularly "Action" and Tony Visconti's involvement is intriguing. The banter is also amusing.

You should tell that to Morrissey, he has the knack of generalizing a whole nation by something like seal hunting, everyone gets shit for something that happens in there country.
he doesn't say one word about the cruelty that happens to animals in Mexico, nothing but nice words, oh no,doesn't want to upset Mexicans does he now. but everywhere else he'd say anything, bit of a fascist.
It seems he doesnt really care about the animals that much seems he is selective in what he complains about, he just uses it for publicity seems like.

Don't they sell children for sex in Jakarta and kill sharks and dolphins in Japan? I think as a Canadian morrissey doesn't really like to play here. Either way his music is way more important to me rather than his beliefs or possible publicity schemes. He really hasn't changed but I like him for who be is not who I want him to be. Lastly, most Canadians are against the seal hunt, I have written my MP, the prime minister as well as Barack Obama to ask him to ask our prime minister. We are trying to end it

Morrissey joined an ongoing protest against Canada organized by PETA. They are very close to shutting down the seal hunt. This wasn't an 'out of the blue' boycott. Sometimes people have to pick their battles. This one is winnable.

No need to tell him. He reads his site lock, stock and barrel. Hence the, "F- So- Low", shirts. Boycott seal made products if it means that much. Enough said.
Agreed that he can't afford to, " offend", mexicans. What, with the child- kidnapping rings, drug cartels, bull-fights, 40,000 murders on their boarder, killing of the Chiapas Indians by Mexican military. On and on we could go with that one. None of that matters a titter to him. "Money Changes Everything" Absolutely!

Sorry I don't have the equipment/technology to upload this anywhere, but just finished watching this on super channel on demand here in Canada.
The band are set up in temple lane studio, a small and apparently hot studio (at one point someone is fanning Morrissey with a towel to keep him cool).
They perform "kids a looker" then the show cuts to Foster the people and another band / performer called Alice Gold for a song each, then cuts back to Moz who performs "Scandinavia" then "action is my middle name".
Show cuts away to foster then Alice then foster once more, then back To Moz for "people are the same everywhere"
There is minimal talking between tracks between Morrissey and the producer just asking if he's ready for the next song, and for his thoughts on how he thought the song sounded afterwards.
There is a funny joke at the end of the show where the producer asks Morrissey if he wants to hit the gong (metal drum) which is to be recorded, and Morrissey has a funny response (I don't want to spoil the joke).
Morrissey is wearing a blue dress shirt with white dots, and the band are all wearing red t shirts (in case people care about this sort of thing).
The songs sounded almost identical to how they were performed in concert last year (I was lucky enough to see Morrissey in both Dublin and Las Vegas in 2011) although there was a synth sound in people are the same that I didn't recognize.
I hope this little review helps, and I'm going to check with other more techie people at work to see if I can get someone to upload this for you.

No, the people I think you are referring to only collect things that they can spend money on, and then lord over other people's heads as evidence of their prowess as "Collectors."
Something like this would be defined as a bootleg, as any copying/distribution of it would be unofficially sanctioned, and -as an unofficially released documented performance- it would be relatively cheap and easy for one to record and then distribute to others for free, peer-to-peer, or through torrents or file sharing sites.
Somewhat bizarrely, this kind of content is seen as important only in terms of content and intrinsic artistic value, and -as such- is relatively useless to The Collectors.
You see, The Collectors have little interest in things like this, as any common pleb can obtain it, so it therefore holds little or no aristocratic value.

That's a very narrow view of collectors. Some collect official items, others collect bootlegs, others collect all.
I personally would love to get my hands on this. Unfortunately, just because I am Canadian and the show was broadcast in Canada does not necessarily mean that I have it. I actually do not know anybody who has it. Hopefully it will be rebroadcast one day to a wider audience.

With all due deference to Stephane, whom I respect a great deal, I believe your take on collectors is accurate. The definition has evolved over the years. There was a time, ten, fifteen years ago when I was a collector. This was pre-web. But I collected because I loved the bands and wanted everything they had ever done.
When you write about these nouveau collectors "lording over" and wanting items with "aristocratic" value - sadly I've found this to be true. Perhaps, it is the value of the items which has ushered in this new attitude? It's almost like this collectible items are investment vechiles! The most I ever paid for a collectible CD was $150. Again, this was pre-web, but I'd like to believe I would have never been so crass as to flaunt what I had over the heads of those who did not. I probably would have wanted to re-coup what I paid for an item, but after doing so I have no problem sharing the item with fellow fans - gratis.
For anyone on the fence, just go back and revisit the whole "Hollywood Bowl" drama. In retrospect, it seems like a quarter of the membership of this website had a copy and wouldn't leak it. They felt intimidated by other collectors.
Some of the very best moments on this site have been when Mr. Reynolds and others offered to empty their vaults if everyone else did the same. I uploaded every bootlegged concert I had, and while not nearly as impressive as Mr. Reynolds November the 2nd, it was so cool to see so much material being made available for everyone to enjoy.
Back to the matter at hand, I'm surprised it didn't get uploaded to smithstorrent.co.uk? If this was indeed a Canadian only affair, I had hoped this would be their just revenge for the concert boycott!

I met Boz at an after show party the night of the the first Vicar St show last year,I'd mentioned that Tony Visconti had put a pic of himself and Boz on Facebook earlier that day and Boz said they had recorded it earlier that day in Temple Lane Studios Temple Bar and it would be shown at a later date on MTV.

That is a Canadian cable provider. Not only do you have to register for their site and be Canadian to view it, you also have to be currently paying for their Cable/On Demand service.
Surely, there must be one Canadian Morrissey fan who uses this site regularly who gets cable service through Rogers?!

I really don't understand the enthusiasm to see this footage. We already know what it'll look like and sound like. There's probably scores of videos of live footage and tv performances providing ample opportunity to see and hear them play all the songs that they always play. Interesting the first few times around, yeah, but not so much anymore.

For one thing, because this is a true studio recording. As in (from the promo photo) Mozza singing alone in a booth wearing headphones. We've all seen him sing in front of an audience and there is some video of him in studio, but a professionally shot production of him singing these new songs is definitely worth the trouble to track down and download.

There is a funny joke at the end of the show where the producer asks Morrissey if he wants to hit the gong (metal drum) which is to be recorded, and Morrissey has a funny response (I don't want to spoil the joke).
A good family friend of mine watched this on Rogers Cable "On Demand" in Canada (she lives near Vancouver), and transcribed the joke at the end for me.Actually, I'm not sure I'd call it a joke as much as a wry musing, but anyway here it is:
Tony Visconti (to Morrissey): "The gong is going to be an overdub. Do you want to hit it?"
Morrissey: "No, I never lower myself to the position of musician." (chuckles)
Tony: "But I've seen you hit the gong before!"
Morrissey: "Only once. But it wasn't recorded."
---end scene---
By the way, she said they put it back into their "on demand" rotation at the middle of June, and it is available again until July 30th.

Morrissey: "Only once. But it wasn't recorded."
By the way, she said they put it back into their "on demand" rotation at the beginning of June, and it is available again until July 30th.
Thanks for the transcription.
It's good to know there are still more opportunities for someone to record it and upload it, but I'm not holding my breath. Seems it would have happened by now.

Here's a screen shot sent to me by my Canadian friend. It's from the opening vignette while Morrissey is waiting for the studio to be set up before recording:

I wish. When I say "family friend", I mean an older Hungarian lady in her 60's. She's been friends with my Mom for ages, and knows my music obsessions, so she didn't mind with the transcription and screen shot (with her younger son's help).
That son is in law enforcement, however, and they politely declined to rip the stream. I'm guessing they are afraid of getting in trouble in terms of the copyright issues.

I've been busy with work and other things, and forgot to post these here. My Vancouver friend sent me two more screen grabs from this elusive video last week. I asked her to please get some good shots, as I wrote (begged) in my email to her, "something cute/quirky":o and I think she (and her son) delivered. Enjoy!:guitar:
The top one shows one of the Moz crew (mustachioed guy?) fanning Morrissey during a break, as the studio is in a hot basement.

And in this next one, while in the recording booth, Morrissey is listening to critique/feedback from Tony V. Rather skeptically, from the looks of it.

Thank you Giselle. If I knew the Hungarian for 'thank you' I'd say that too :thumb:
The fanner is the same wee guy that was seen by his side on an LA sidewalk a few years ago, and most recently during the South American madness. Seems somewhat slight for security?
Or perhaps Sarah Yeoman just lost a hell of alot of weight and gained some facial hair.

The return of the mysterious mustachioed man !
Still hoping this feature will turn up somehow or other. I'm quite keen to see the "in-studio" aspects. Always liked the interviews ( the few there are) where Boz/Alain/etc. talked about the recordings .

So I guess his view point on musicians has not changed too much. Still 'lawnmower parts' to him. That's sad. These are the people who back him, add the flavor of music to his lyrics. Even if said jokingly, it wasn't funny. Poor taste, poor form. Could be he's a bit jealous that HE can't play an instrument?

This is ridiculous, I signed up for the Rogers TV anyplace (free) I see the link with a beautiful screen cap & when I click on it tells me I have to be in Canada. There has to be a way to fool the site into thinking I am coming through a Canada IP address (I googled but links seem sketchy)? I am not very technical but this can be done? Does someone have a link to do this & if so can you explain this to a technically challenged person?

Would an anonymous proxy server do the job? I've used one myself to get around the no piratebay in the uk issue. They don't know where you're from so they don't blocke piratebay, same thing may work here free to set up an account just a bit of a faf, but worth it to gain the love an d respect from your fellow desciples. when you post your ripped copy.

It doesn't matter if you sign up for free and fool the site that you're in Canada...the Studio In Session episode requires you to be a subscriber, which means you must be a paying customer.

And to add a bit more on this, this film shows that Morrissey does respect his mucisians.
Tony V asks Morrissey if he would like to get straight into the next song or take a break - he is open minded but asks his band. They all shrug their shoulders and Solomon is the only one who expresses an opinion - which Morrissey has a joke at but they do what Solomon wants. The whole film shows Morrissey working well with the band.
Even the clip where Morrissey is being fanned by the hair stylist. Morrissey is joking by saying "Faster, faster" but he thanks him and then joins the rest of the band.
It shows Morrissey in a very good light. You should all see it! Now, back to the point of the thread!
