View Full Version : Will The Cinema Ever Decrease In Price?

Why is the cinema so expensive? It's getting ridiculous! Are they even making profit?
I usually wait and just rent or download the dvd now, it's pointless paying around £7 or £8 to watch something once that lasts around 2 hours and you have no idea if it's going to be absolute dire or not!
What do you think?

I hope they figure something out. I love going to the movie. :o I know they're germy and expensive and you have to hear people chew and all that, but I love the big screen and strangers sitting together in a room all experiencing the same thing at the same time.

The thought of going to the cinema makes me want to vomit. Sitting in a dark room with strangers, eating junk food, watching a screen that's too big and volume that's too loud. I can't even watch a full film, I have to break it down into 30 minute parts and watch it over the course of several days. Even then, I always sit there wondering why I'm even watching it in the first place: "NONE of this is real" is a recurring thought.
Not liking films puts a surprisingly large dampner on your social life, it seems to be the first thing people suggest when they want to meet up.

Wow Ive never come across anyone who doesn't like movies before, not something I thought would bother someone, it must be difficult, films everywhere, but not being able to loose yourself in it and be constantly aware this isn't real, would make movies unwatchable.
They'll bring the prices down when people stop going.but I don't think this will happen its still affordable for core audiences 15 to 30 years olds.

I heard a statistic on the radio a couple weeks ago that said, in America at least, that this was the WORST year for movie ticket sales of all time. But that more people than ever are watching movies...just at home.

I'm glad I will never see you in cinema.

If I ever win a lottery I'll start my own cinema (no food, no mobile phone policy).

Personally, I am so uninterested by 100% of the films that see wide theatrical releases (meaning, films that even make it to theatres where I live [Huntsville, AL... which is not exactly a thriving metropolis, but, I mean, it's not the middle of nowhere... We have NASA across the street from my old high school FFS]) that I don't ever go to see them (or even buy/download them).

The last few times I've been to see a movie (I could probably count the total number of times in the last 5 years on one hand), it was always or almost always when someone offered to take me and paid for my ticket, and it was never my suggestion...

I've seen a few small-release movies that I actually paid for, but those don't really count as "cinema" so much as low-budget docus and "art" films at small local establishments.

The reason they charge so much is probably because they suck so much ass that they have to make up for a lack of attendance (I can't be the only one who feels apathetic about every fucking wide-release movie in the last decade, right?).

the raytownian

PS: I am not much of a "movie" person... much more interested in wasting entire weeks of mny life on records instead. ;)

I do like going out to see Rocky Horror, and do the Time Warp while drunk on Mad Dog and Wild I. It's become a sort of tradition for me... I like any public viewing scenario where I can drink, really, haha... Regular cinemas are not really my bag though... It's always fun to get stoned with friends at their house while watching movies, or watching weird old movies alone in bed to. The standard "commercial" movie theatre is just such a boring suckhole that never shows anything worth seeing...

All that said, I still don't watch a ton of movies very frequently, or, if I do, I have kind of a marathon of viewing, and then watch nothing for a really long time... same way with games... I can play a game for weeks//months, and then not play a single thing for months (or years in some cases).

I'd maybe just buy a warehouse, one seat, a projector and a screen if I were you. I can't imagine the no-fun cinema would be that popular.
You'll never win the/a lottery anyway, dear. You're a born loser. There aren't many films about cats you could show at the KewPlex, are there? Apart from The Aristocats. And maybe the Don't Do That To My Pussy series.

Yeah, I'm a born loser because since I've lived in the UK I won:

some theatre tickets
some books, DVDs and CDs (one of them is PJ Harvey Mercury prize winning autographed CD and photo)
numerous film preview tickets (one of them was Fargo)
£500 voucher of Habitat
2 YATQ CDs (standard and deluxe on courtesy of X FM)
Some live concert tickets (Bjork MTV Unplugged, Belle and Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand etc)
£7753.80 lottery winning to the date (missed £7000 x 6 because my numbers matched only 3 out of 4 :( )

the reason the cinema is so expensive is because you're paying for the production costs of the experience.

The sound and optics systems installed especially

coupled with the fact that the cinema itself has to make a profit on its customers = expensive prices on tickets, concessions, etc.

You can't honestly believe the 3-D and extra-spacious reclining seats are coming out of the cinema's pockets

Hey DD, is it the unreality that puts you off movies?
What about all this American stuff on telly, like Madmen, Sopranos, CSI etc, do you watch them?
What about documentaries?
Radio is great. I'm a bit of a Radio 4 fan although my wife thinks it's a load of complacent middle class poncery.

Yes, it's the "not real" thing that causes me to switch off. I don't watch any of those Anerican shows that are so popular these days. I rarely watch tv at all, actually. And anything I do watch i watch on iPlayer etc.
Listen to podcasts too, but not sure about radio 4... Always seems to be the snidey, moaning "satirists" on their shows. Not my cup of tea at all.

Or dead cats that I could smuggle in about my person. You could probably get 3 or 4 strapped to you without anyone noticing. I don't think cinema workers are trained to spot people smuggling dead cats. Or maybe they are, I don't know... as I say, I don't go to the cinema.

I rather like 3D movies in the cinema! I don't have a blu ray player, surround sound or a 3D screen, so when I watch things in 3D it makes things a bit special. I wonder what Star Wars will be like in 3D...Liam Neeson weilding a lightsaber in 3D? Woahh!

I actually bought a Star Wars 3D poster from HMV today :D

I'd rather lead an average real life than a totally made-up one. And if you think the world is miserable and boring, you're not making enough effort to go and see all the brilliant things that are out there.

Not that you're asking me, but no. Zero interest here. Documentaries are a totally different thing though.
I don't listen to radio, either, for that matter... I can't be troubled to tune into NPR every time there might be something interesting on, and that's literally the only station where I live that's even worth half a shit to me.

Point is, maybe I live under a rock, but I really don't care for any of that stuff... I watch hella TV, but it's mostly Golden Girls and Matlock and cartoons and shit...

I also tend to follow the idea of "freeganism" more than vegetarianism, which is to say, I am not likely to refuse dumpstered animal products if I am not supporting the industry by PAYING for them (plus, I feel wasteful not to eat dumpstered animal products, because at least the death is [weirdly] justified by not ending up in a landfill).

Given the choice, I would prefer to buy only "vegetarian-friendly" foods, but I'd prefer to buy nothing from the industry at all, even "vegetarian" stuff... Big agriculture = lots of land devastation and plenty of dead animals as a result from tilling and toxins alone.

Yes I'm the same. If I eat meat (which is likely) then I make sure I don't waste anything. I think people who waste meat are worse than the people who kill the animal.

i used to be a pretty regular cinema-goer, but i gave up after a while as i saw so many terrible movies. my wallet also wasn't enjoying the experience. i feel that the american film industry has gone to the dogs. they keep churning out terrible movie after terrible movie, sequel after sequel. once you release a film with adam sandler playing the roles of a man and his twin sister, you know the end days are approaching.

slighty off topic:
i do find it very uncomfortable watching an intimate love scene(no matter what gender) when someone is sitting next to me*squirms".

Care might be the wrong word. I'd go for "profound pity". You're mentally ill and have no-one in your life who cares enough about you to have you sectioned. That's quite an achievement in itself, I suppose.

Wheyy someone who's responding to the thread and agreeing! :) God, I remember watching sex scenes with my Mum and Dad on the TV one night a couple of years ago and I had to just walk out the room....I just couldn't bare the fact they were watching a sex scene with me! I've always felt really awkward during sex scenes in films when watching with my folks... Coming out hasn't mad it that much less awkward... The only benefit being that I can sort of deflect my discomfort by feigning excitement at the sight of breasts, which is "funny" because "oh, yeah, my son's a fag".

PS: Too many negative vibes in this thread, broz. Let's all have a hot dog and a Miller Light and talk this out peaceably through a round of arm wrastlin', because I totally love all that stuff.

In Sweden it's not the price that is the problem but the films they choose to show. It seems the time it takes between being shown on cinema and being available through on demand services is getting shorter by the month.
If you wanna see anything other than the no brainers and mainstream films you have to find these obscure little cinemas in our big cities. I would gladly pay more if they only showed the films I wanna see but prefer films at home cause one can take breaks and chill out like you cannot do in cinemas.
I have my own cinema screen and projector and a big 60 inch tv so I cannot say that I miss the cinema. Me and my girlfriend have visited a cinema once a year at most.

You might not start fights, but you seem to be trying to stir shit here. You and "most people" here might like her - fair enough. She seemed harmless enough until she called me a cunt. Me not liking her doesn't prevent the rest of you from playing happy families. And I'm nothing like VivaHate. I'm not a stalking, manipulating, shit-stirring psychopath for a start. I want to be hit by a moped. :p No but really, the people I am housesitting for go all over the world watching birds and taking photos. Their screen saver rotates through all their photos, so I'll walk into the computer room to look at the internet and this guy will be staring at me from some outdoor market in India.

I hope I'm not too late on this thread, but I believe the reason for the ridiculous cost of going to the cinema is that massive corporations like Universal Cinema Group (UCG) have driven all the small, local cinemas out of business deliberately in a ploy to corner the market and ramp up the profits, and they are in cahoots with the movie/film making Hollywood giants. They have a deal between them ensuring that all the UCG cinemas will always have the latest blockbuster movies whilst the small, independent cinemas are not in on the party and have to wait many weeks or months for the rights to show films. Personally, I would rather sit in a small, independent cinema and support a local business and community than go to one of those horrid, commercial behemoths. My grandad used to be a cinematographer, or projectionist as it's known these days, he worked in many of the old time classic cinema houses in Manchester so I will always have an interest in local cinemas. I think if you asked most people they would rather walk to a local cinema, pay a fair price to watch a film and not have to spend twenty five pounds on additional extras like popcorn and drinks. But it's out of our hands, and a lot of the marketing in these places is aimed at kids getting their parents to stump up cash. Last time I had the misfortune to attend a film at a UCG cinema, you didn't even have to ask for popcorn, it was all there for kids to just grab and take to the cashier, same with the fizzy drinks, the kids were just grabbing large everything and filling up then dragging mum and dad to the cashier to pay for it. It's a very slick operation, all aimed at robbing you of every penny you have on you. I'm not massively into films myself, I get bored of any tv or film after about 20 minutes, so if there's anything I desperately want to watch I will wait for the DVD.
