Indie imprint American Laundromat Recordings (http://www.alr-music.com/) this fall will issue a brand-new tribute album to The Smiths (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smiths) featuring newly recorded covers by the likes of Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch, (http://www.builttospill.com/) The Wedding Present (http://www.scopitones.co.uk/) and its spin-off Cinerama, (http://www.scopitones.co.uk/) and former Throwing Muses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throwing_Muses) member Tanya Donelly. (http://www.tanyadonelly.com/)
Although that tracklist isn’t quite finalized and an exact release date isn’t set, Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to The Smiths is expected out this fall, and a preliminary list of artists and covers includes at 17 participants — including David Gedge, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gedge) who is recording “Hand in Glove” with the Wedding Present and “London” with Cinerama.
Other contributors of note: The Vivian Girls’ Katy Goodman, (http://www.myspace.com/viviangirlsnyc) who is contributing a track to be announced later; the Candy Butchers’ Mike Viola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Viola) tackling “How Soon Is Now?”; and Martsch offering up “Reel Around the Fountain,” an apt choice given the live Built to Spill staple “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” he first recorded with the Halo Benders. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Halo_Benders)
The Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to The Smiths disc is now available for preorder (http://www.alr-music.com/) from the label, which, in the past three or four years, has released such titles as Just Like Heaven: A Tribute to The Cure (http://www.alr-music.com/main.php?content=shop&no=alr-0018) and Dig for Fire: A Tribute to Pixies. (http://www.alr-music.com/main.php?content=shop&no=alr-0011)
Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to The Smiths confirmed artists:
Cinerama, “London”
Class Actress, “Ask”
Dala, “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me”
Doug Martsch (Built To Spill), “Reel Around the Fountain”

Well, I don't like tribute albums anyway... mainly when I don't know who are the artists as in this case. But the cover is truly beautiful - although it has nothing to do with Smiths' albums.

The cover looks familiar to me in some way.
It's not a photo from a scene in the 60s film blow-up is it?

We first reported (http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2011/02/28/please-please-please-a-tribute-to-the-smiths/) on Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to the Smiths (http://alr-music.com/main.php?content=shop&no=alr-0027) in its early stages last February, but the 20-song tracklist is now finalized and its release is set for Dec. 13.
The set is available for pre-order (http://alr-music.com/) in three configurations: a $13 bundle, which includes the CD and a one-inch promo pin; a $20 bundle, which includes the CD, a limited-edition 7-inch with three more covers, a download of those tracks, and the pin; or a $35 bundle, which includes the CD, the 7-inch, the downloads, the pin, a T-shirt and a “private preview of the album.”
In a fitting touch, the label — which previously has released the compilations Just Like Heaven: A Tribute to The Cure (http://www.amazon.com/Just-Like-Heaven-Tribute-Cure/dp/B001FN4EW6/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1319032657&sr=1-2) and Dig for Fire: A Tribute to the Pixies (http://www.amazon.com/Dig-Fire-Tribute-Pixies/dp/B000XLQGIQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1319032688&sr=1-1) — was able to secure a photo of ’60s U.K. pop star Sandie Shaw (http://www.sandieshaw.com/) for the cover art; Shaw, of course, was a favorite of both Morrissey (http://www.itsmorrisseysworld.com/) and Johnny Marr (http://www.johnny-marr.com/) who, in 1984, covered The Smiths’ “Hand in Glove.”
Also of note: The CD features a newly recorded cover of “Reel Around the Fountain” from Built to Spill’s Martsch, who, in 1998, paid tribute to that song with “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain,” the opening track to The Rebels Not In (http://www.amazon.com/Rebels-Not-Halo-Benders/dp/B000003RPJ/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1319032785&sr=1-1), the third album from his side project The Halo Benders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Halo_Benders).

thank you, Mr Seeker. Tanya Donelly is one of my favourite lady singers of all time so I'd love to hear her sing a Smiths song. I'm sure in earlier reports, tho, the Leisure Society were due to cover 'That Joke' which I was also hugely looking forward to. wonder what happened with that...

Tanya Donnelly is indeed an underrated genius and her contribution will be worth the asking price, although I will, of course, download it from Mediafire.

Now why would you ask an almost total stranger an odd thing like that? Do you think he may have some inside track in the Diablo world?
