We know Morrissey loved Kirsty MacColl (RIP), but he also hated the Happy Mondays and Madchester in general I assume.

Wonder what he thought of Kirsty doing backing vocals for Hallelujah and even appearing on TOTP with the shambolic legends (I've always liked them).

I think Moz always liked Kirsty - I've read that he regretted not making it to her funeral (I think???).

Take a look at this pic - Moz wearing a Harvey Keitel t-shirt (circa 1991-2?) the Mondays / Madchester were done by 1990 - so I think he forgave her for embracing Madchester :)

Given that Kirsty released Electric Landlady in 1991 and that Johnny came up with the name because she was his 'electric landlady' at the time - they must have been moving in the same circles Moz / Maccoll / Marr / Lillywhite / Boorer etc...

Happier days.

Where / when did he say he hated the Mondays / Madchester? (Not saying he didn't say it just wondering where / when he did say it).

I imagine as an artist himself, he would have thought if Kirsty is happy doing it then it's fine by him. Can't really imagine him having a problem with it really.

S Morrissey never hated the Happy Mondays.
In fact, he actually said that he quite like one of their earlier, pre-fame albums.

Okay maybe "hate" is too strong, but he was not impressed with any of that movement whatsoever.

I thought he may have mentioned Mondays negatively in another interview as well.

Thanks for the link - yes clearly not impressed:lbf:
That was written at the time in 1990 - I'd love to know his opinion of the era now, 20 years on.
Seems strange that if you ask a lot of those bands who they were inspired by, The Smiths would have been one of the main inspirations for getting a band together.

Thanks for this summary.

Morrissey is just so harsh on music he doesn't like that I had to wonder. To Jukebox Jury -- I'm trying to think of any negative musical opinions of his that have softened. He thought Joy Division was as flat as a pancake then, and now. There was the "reggae is vile" comment but he chose a label name that recalled reggae classics.

He was also no fan of The Polecats and ended up working with Boz longer than any other collaborator (though that doesn't mean he's become a fan of Boz' old group).

Contradictory bugger.
