In 2007 we have been rating and assessing every 234 then released Morrissey and Smiths-songs from Hand In Glove (april 1983) to That's How People Grow Up (February 2008).
Over the last couple of months I've also set up polls for every song released since.

There were a little over 35,000 votes!
Thanks all for voting and commenting in the polls!

As all the old polls have remained open, there are some minor changes in the Top 100, as well as 2 new entries from the 2008/2009 period.

The single with the worst B-sides? Yes.
Worst single? No, not by a long way.
That one is coming up just now...

Great work!

Whatever you think of the results the lower 200 or so highlight how strong even Morrissey's weakest output is. Personally, I LOVE: Don’t Make Fun Of Daddy’s Voice, Born To Hang, Now I Am A Was, Heir Apparent, On The Streets I Ran, The Public Image, Christian Dior, Roy’s Keen, Fantastic Bird. At Amber, Dagenham Dave, At Last I Am Born, Ammunition, East West, Best Friend On The Payroll, Because Of My Poor Education, Death At One’s Elbow, Black-Eyed Susan, America Is Not The World, Work Is A Four Letter Word, He Cried, Sorry Doesn't Help,Tony The Pony, Found Found Found, and Sweetie Pie!

Thank you for all the work this must have cost, the results have been eagerly awaited.

Interesting to see that the highest entry from YOR is no better than 96th. I would have thought it'd do better. Nice to see My Dearest Love getting some recognition, it's a great song.

Of course, like everyone else there's lots of things one could go into, such as the absolute incomprehensibility of Speedway and Suedehead beating all but 3 Smiths songs, but I won't. :)

Thanks for doing this.

What strikes me about this list, more than anything else, is that you can throw out all but the top 100 and every single one of those hundred is a stone-cold classic. Can't say that about many artists.

1st of all, I am posting to this thread without reading the whole thing so far, as I often do :o

Low placings perhaps, but not low ratings.

Everything from no. 210 onwards is rated as over 7. It's tight up there at the top!

Only 8 songs been voted as less than a 6. Amazing really.

For starters, here's Years of Refusal's performance in the charts:

Black Cloud 7,28
I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris 8,06

You Were Good in Your Time 6,66
Sorry Doesn't Help 6,22
I'm OK by Myself 7,79

Which means it's a tie with Southpaw Grammar:

Morrissey-albums:

I see the opposite, far too many overrated Morrissey songs. As far as I'm concerned, put a song like "Suedehead" on TQID, and it's downright embarassing. Would you be happy if I repaid the compliment and argued that's because people primarily interested in his solo work are stupid, light-headed and without a sense of perspective? Or do you think perhaps it would be better to assume that it's possible to judge music differently without the neccessity for character flaws?

Ah yes of course, very perceptive. In my ignorance I voted 10s for many Smiths tracks and doled out 5s for several solo efforts... and not because (as I thought prior to being enlightened by you) the Smiths songs are superior in every way, I realize now after your post of clarity it was because I'm so STUBBORN! I need to be more openminded about crappy songs and learn not to be bothered by frivolous things like whether I actually like it or not. Well done, Skullock Holmes. What gave me away?

Houdini , are the above scores for SG & Maladjusted in their revised formats or their original ? And what about Swords ? Thanks

The original, in both cases. Interesting to see if the revised editions have better average ratings, so here:

Southpaw Grammar (1995):

1) The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils 7,65
2) Reader Meet Author 8,20
3) The Boy Racer 7,99
4) The Operation 7,29
5) Dagenham Dave 6,80
6) Do Your Best and Don’t Worry 7,31
7) Best Friend On The Payroll 6,60
8) Southpaw 8,42

average score: 7,53

Southpaw Grammar 2009 edition:

1) The Boy Racer 7,99
2) Do Your Best And Don't Worry 7,31
3) Reader Meet Author 8,20
4) Honey, You Know Where To Find Me 7,80
5) Dagenham Dave 6,80
6) Southpaw 8,42
7) Best Friend On The Payroll 6,60
8) Fantastic Bird 6,83
9) The Operation 7,29
10) The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils 7,65
11) You Should Have Been Nice To Me 7,81
12) Nobody Loves Us 8,96

average score: 7,64

So that's a pretty significant improvement, largely due to the inclusion of Nobody Loves Us, the best rated 1995 song.

Houdini
February 5, 2010, 10:26 AM
And as for Maladjusted:

Maladjusted (1997):

1) Maladjusted, 8,34
2) Alma Matters, 7,94
3) Ambitious Outsiders 6,30
4) Trouble Loves Me, 9,12
5) Papa Jack, 5,11
6) Ammunition, 6,69
7) Wide To Receive 7,38
8) Roy's Keen, 6,84
9) He Cried, 6,38
10) Sorrow Will Come In The End, 5,51
11) Satan Rejected My Soul, 7,89

average score: 7,05

Maladjusted (2009 edition):

1) Maladjusted, 8,34
2) Ambitious Outsiders, 6,30
3) Trouble Loves Me, 9,12
4) Lost, 8,40
5) He Cried, 6,38
6) Alma Matters, 7,94
7) Heir Apparent, 7,03
8) Ammunition, 6,69
9) The Edges Are No Longer Parallel 7,90
10) This Is Not Your Country 6,88
11) Wide To Receive 7,38
12) I Can Have Both 8,01
13) Now I Am A Was 7,06
14) Satan Rejected My Soul, 7,89
15) Sorrow Will Come In The End, 5,51

average score: 7,39

An even bigger improvement, replacing Papa Jack (5.11) for Lost (8,40) would have improved the original album bij almost 0,5 point already!

And here's Swords . It averages at 7.37, which is a little below Years of Refusal (see above):

1) Good Looking Man About Town 7,39
2) Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice 7,15
3) If You Don't Like Me, Don't Look At Me 7,60
4) Ganglord 8,01
5) My Dearest Love 8,52
6) The Never-Played Symphonies 8,51
7) Sweetie Pie 5,53
8) Christian Dior 6,87
9) Shame Is The Name 7,67
10) Munich Air Disaster 1958 7,33
11) I Knew I Was Next 7,40
12) It's Hard To Walk Tall When You're Small 7,44

18) Because Of My Poor Education 6,56

average rating: 7,37

This has already been done, with the results 2 years ago, see here (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showthread.php?t=83646&page=5).

Boorer actually beat Whyte by quite a margin, though both lost to Street (and Marr of course). I don't think much will change with the 2008/2009 songs though the highest scoring new song (My Dearest Love) would certainly improve Alain's ratings.

I'll gladly add the 2008/2009-songs later on.

I did a list by year in the previous thread, you can find all the results from 1983-2006 there (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showthread.php?t=83646&page=6).

Here are the 2008 and 2009 lists:

Best of 2008, average song score: 7,43

1. My Dearest Love (2008) 8,52
2. All You Need Is Me (2008) 7,98
3. That’s How People Grow Up (2008) 7,20
4. Children In Pieces (2008) 6,80
5. Drive-In Saturday (2008) 6,66

Best of 2009, average song score: 7,45

1. It's Not Your Birthday Anymore (2009) 8,36
2. Something Is Squeezing My Skull (2009) 8,20
3. I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris (2009) 8,06
4. When Last I Spoke To Carol (2009) 7,90
5. You Should Have been Nice To Me (2009) 7,81
6. Honey, You Know Where To Find Me (2009) 7,80
7. I'm OK By Myself (2009) 7,79

14. Because Of My Poor Education (2009) 6,56
15. Sorry Doesn't Help (2009) 6,22

So better years than 2006, 1997 and 1991, but worse than almost any other year.
Here are the averages for all the years:

1983, average score: 8,62 (6 songs)
1984, average score: 8,76 (17 songs)

Thank you for all the work this must have cost, the results have been eagerly awaited.

Interesting to see that the highest entry from YOR is no better than 96th. I would have thought it'd do better. Nice to see My Dearest Love getting some recognition, it's a great song.

Of course, like everyone else there's lots of things one could go into, such as the absolute incomprehensibility of Speedway and Suedehead beating all but 3 Smiths songs, but I won't. :)

cheers

Yep. 'Suedehead' especially. I mean, it's a good song, but for me it's nothing special. I'm also vaguely saddened at the fact that the YOR songs are so far down the list and that the album as a whole is rated so badly, although I can't say I'm surprised- lovers of the album such as myself seem to be either the minority or not particularly vocal on here. As I said on another thread (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showthread.php?t=106725&page=3&highlight=Beethoven), possibly nostalgia or sentimental connections with particular songs or albums has something to do with this... but I digress.

For me, "Suedehead" and for that matter "Everyday is like Sunday" is a case of the opposite of sentimental connection. They both just stopped working for me 15 years ago or so - when I listen to them I can technically tell they're nice pop songs, but they just leave me absolutely cold - they don't give me anything. When I play VH or BD I usually just skip them. They're used up. I don't think I can say that about any other Morrissey songs.

Same here. Kinda burned out on those songs a while ago.

That being said, as brilliant as those two songs are, I think they're both grossly overrated. Morrissey's come out with such brilliant solo music over the past 20 years and I find it odd that his first two singles happened to score so high.

do you play a musical instrument at all?
if you do, play the chords to Suedehead and Everyday is Like Sunday and sing along, and you'll see that they are truly wonderful pieces of music.
then play the chords to Father Must be Killed, Sorry Doesn't Help, How Can Anyone Possibly Know, On the Streets I Ran, or 80% of the post 2000 Moz material and you'll notice they are flimsy, melodically weak pieces of music.
it's obviously possible to be over-exposed to a song, but the sheer musical quality of Suedehead and Everyday, and 92% of all those early Morrissey/Street compositions is absolutely undeniable.

Yep, piano. Although badly. And I don't have one. And the cornet, but don't even get me started about that. :)

I'm not questioning them on technical grounds, they are obviously well-crafted pop tunes and I completely agree about the flimsy melodical structure of the songs you mention. I simply note that unlike almost all the other songs of that period, who I keep returning to periodically if not constantly, they simply don't retain any power to interest me. Perhaps the problem is that they are rather too picture-perfect? I really don't know, I can only observe the effect.

fair point - presumably you will have heard them a lot more than the other songs of that era too.
I deliberately ration the amount of times I listen to the best Smiths and Morrissey songs. if I got in a car, now, and heard Everyday or Suedehead on the radio, I'd turn the volume up, sing along, and still consider them to be works of absolute genius...

Actually no, not really. I instantly liked them of course, but my favorites on VH from the beginning were Maudlin Street and Dial-a-cliche. Who still remain my favorites from that album, now that I think of it.

Really, how difficult can this be to understand? People give "Panic" a higher vote than "Wide to receive" because they think it's a much better song, not because of nostalgia. If you ask me, "Panic" is an excellent 9 and one of the smiths' better songs, "Wide to receive" is a mediocre 6 and one of Morrissey's weaker songs. We all have songs here we think are overrated, and ones that we think are underrated.

gosh - it's a real inditement on the quality of the 21st century stuff, isn't it? what on earth would Moz make of it all?
out of 66 songs, only four were considered as good as an average Smiths song (8.6/10).

also, just two songs reaching 9/10. there were eight in the 90's and thirty in the 80's (including six from Steven Street).

STEPHEN Street, not Steven.

I bet the majority of the people who took part in the polls like Smiths more than solo stuff.

We all have songs here we think are overrated, and ones that we think are underrated.

cheers

Ok, I don't want to offend anyone and I agree with you: I'm sure that many people vote judging quality, or whatever arrives to their ears and hearts, but in my personal opinion, sometimes objectivity fails. I am quite sure that it's more likely for a 20 years old boy today to fall in love with Years of Refusal than any of the songs in The Smiths or Hatful of Hollow...And most Morrissey fans are older than 30 today...so...it could be that sometimes, only sometimes objectivity may fail...Anyway I like the polite way you discuss and I like it. Thank you!

Absolutely, we all bring our different circumstances, tastes and preconditions to the experience of the music. Inescapably so. And it's not really any question of objectivity, on the contrary any judgment of taste is neccessarily subjective. But there's a difference between a subjective taste judgement and an inability to judge music openly and fairly because of stubbornness, nostalgia etc etc. Anyway, glad to see that harmony and agreement reigns in the end. :)

cheers

:tears: An abomination. Also, I couldn't see 'Friday Mourning' on that list. Although maybe that's just my bad eyesight...

Thank you!

I agree with you too skull. :)

This little tangent is interesting. Thanks as always to Houdini for his (her?) copious charts. While Mozzer's output in the aughts ranks lowest overall, his cover versions did quite well it seems. Surprised Interlude and Skin Storm are that high up. My impression was that Interlude was often dismissed by fans and critics alike. It's a pretty thing but just by listening to it it's obviously a duet only in the most technical of terms.

No One Can Hold...I think of all the covers, the lyrics of this one come across more like Morrissey's own than any other which may be a reason it works so very well. Really like the sound of A Song From... too.

Human Being -- good feel but drags on one verse/chorus too long. This one could use a fan edit.

Not recorded so it's not part of the chart but I was excited when I heard he did Street Life, perhaps my favourite Roxy track ever. Then I heard it...
