View Full Version : The Moz/Smiths Top 100, Part 257: OH PHONEY

In 2007, and early 2008, we put up polls for all 234 then released Morrissey and The Smiths-songs. More than 25,000 votes were cast and the result was The Morrissey/Smiths Top 100 (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showthread.php?t=83646), or indeed, The Morrissey/The Smiths Top 234. This year many people have asked me to continue with the polls as 18 new Morrissey-songs have been released since. With the release of 'Swords' now seems as good a time as any to start them.

Now that we've done all the new songs from 2009, and the older songs released this year, and with no foreseeable new songs in the near future, to finish these series off we'll move to the unreleased (full) tracks that have emerged over the last couple of year, i.e. Born To Hang, Happy Lovers United, I'm Playing Easy To Get, Lifeguard On Duty, Oh Phoney, Please help The Cause Against Loneliness and Striptease With A Difference, in that order.

We're down to the final 3 songs.

I acknowledge Celibates comment, but I just have to give it a 9.

Poor sound quality it may have, but look past it and I can't help but love the bouncy rhythm, the beautifully quirky vocal and the amusing lyrics.

despite I gave it 10 (!), I fully second that. :o the song definitely can't compare to Moz classics and has questionable artistic value, but I like it: catchy tune, funny lyrics - sort of a guilty pleasure. ;)

I gave it a strong nine too, being funny and quirky. It's probably got his most absurd falsetto vocals ever committed to tape, and even Moz sounds like he's having tons of fun. Great song - brilliant or at least near brilliant.

for that bus conductor alone, specific the person named, it should've not been released, Morrissey should be embarreassed, I bet he's not proud

This sounds like an early 90's rockabilly type thing so presumably it was Nevin or Whyte?

Street I guess, Nevin was around Kill uncle time

I say this again, cause it'S like an unfinisheD song, and mr. Reilly once told in an intervieuw that when he came in for recordings of Viva Hate, there were only some songstructure demoos done by Street, and he put the right herbs and spices innit

so that's my thinking it's Street, and some adding from Vinny but not really
completed

I'll check me Mozipedia, when I go to bed, so I can focus my mind on this,
than my boring painfull day.
