View Full Version : Mozipedia - What have you learnt?

I've only managed to get through A and a little bit of B, but I've leant a couple of things that I never knew:
I never knew that Joan Armatrading was a source for inspiration and lifting lyrics.
It completely passed me by that he won an Ivor Novello for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1998
I had no idea that Morrissey is supposed to look like Stanley Baldwin :lbf:

So, what nuggets have you learnt?

Mrs F is a Joan Armatrading fan, so we knew about that. I was constantly suprised by the film and literary references, they had nearly all passed me by.

It also hurts when it's on top of a stack of books on your radiator next to the couch and you try to get at one of the books under it and it falls down and hits your head. :blushing:
Eh, the whole section about food was news to me... well, probably just to me? :o

'Hell Drivers' (1957), directed by Cy Endfield, co-starring Patrick McGoohan, Herbert Lom and Sean Connery. Cracking little film about dirty truckers!

I'm up to 'D' now
I didn't know that Joe Dallesandro was on the cover of Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers as well as The Smiths.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/RSSF71.jpg
But then I don't scour wiki either:
A Warhol photograph of the large crotch bulge of Dallesandro's tight blue jeans graces the famous cover of the Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers. Dallesandro explained to biographer Michael Ferguson, “It was just out of a collection of junk photos that Andy pulled from. He didn't pull it out for the design or anything, it was just the first one he got that he felt was the right shape to fit what he wanted to use for the fly.” The 1980s British band The Smiths would later use a still photograph of Dallesandro from the film Flesh as the cover of their eponymous debut album.

I haven't read the book, but I've heard from people that have that he writes a great deal about the 1960s band Herman's Hermits of whom Morrissey is a big fan of. What exactly does he say about HH?

Morrissey has perforated eardrums? So he was like that kid at the pool in the summertime who was always swimming around that had cotton balls melting out of his ears because they couldn't get wet? There was ALWAYS one of those little boys around, how strange.

I've just leant that I lived in the same house as Johnny Marr. How cool is that? :guitar:
p252 "There was also Andrew Berry, the hairdresser and DJ who stayed on Palatine Road, home to Factory Records, where Marr would also briefly lodge".
I've mentioned living here before http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showpost.php?p=1014187&postcount=17 it's by far the coolest place I've ever lived, but had no idea that Johnny used to live there as well.
Apparently, Marr "led a mercurial life, bouncing from Rohde's house (Shelly Rhode Granada presenter) in Bowden to Berry's in Didsbury"
He met Morrissey in 1982 and it's well known that they used to spend time at Morrissey's house in Stretford and in Marr's house in Bowden where they first wrote Suffer Little Children and The Hand That Rock's the cradle.
There's the slimmest possibility that they my have done something in Palatine Road - is anyone in touch with Simon Goddard to see if he knows and if he knows which flat Berry lived?

Flat one is ground floor on the left as we look at it - that was Factory records office. When I lived there the cellars were full of old Factory stuff. Probably worth a fortune these days...
I lived in flat 6, top floor - the small square windows at the top right of the pic.
Whilst I lived there it was temporarily used as a film set for 24 hour party people - I met Tony Wilson and Steve Coogan dressed as Tony Wilson :D
Happy days... I didn't have kids... rode a classic motorbike...

I was at a concert where someone requested "...Camden" and his reply was that he hadn't figured out how to do that one live. Shame; it's so wonderful.
I too have learned much from the volume, and generally just pick it up when a particular song is foremost in my mind and want to compare my interpretation to his.....
re: above mentions of Jo Slee; I was surprised that while I came across a passing mention of her in an entry, she didn't earn an entry of her own. As many people who are 2- or 3-times removed from the man are discussed in depth, it would have made sense to at least provide some basics on this PA who had clocked many hours with the man (and produced such a valued book....). Oh well, just idle curiosity, but in many ways this volume addresses such curiosities so well.....

I doubt it will be printed in the US & if you were to find it on an import shelf state-side, the retailer likely marks-up imports beyond the exchange rate... a "convenience premium." I found a few US sites that were importing copies, but it was cheaper to order from amazon.co.uk (exchange rate and all....)

On the Joan Armatrading thing again, (I went to her concert at the Royal Albert Hall yesterday BTW), I see that her new album is titled "This Charming Life". Not surprisingly at least one reviewer on Amazon got it wrong and typed "This Charming Man". Maybe when "Armatradapedia" is written there'll be an entry on how Joan was influenced by Moz.

Also that both played very little on songs composed by the other

That's amazing, Dave. You lucky thing! A piece of Smiths history...
I learned from the Mozipedia that his favourite musical instrument is the drums, his favourite movie circa 1992 was "Romper Stomper", and he believes in ghosts.
Also (during the Smiths era, at least) Morrissey would wash all his clothes by hand in the bathtub. And that we wore Marks & Spencer underpants. :o

I didn't learn the origins of the title 'Beethoven Was Deaf'. I'm 95%convinced that it was the punchline to a joke I once heard on The Comedians (a seventies TV showcase of mainly northern comics). But the BWD entry in Mozipedia just provides a few biographical titbits about the composer.
I'd love to hear that joke again.
