The Philadelphia Inquirer just put out an interesting article on British youth and alcoholism. Apparently, British kids are 5 times more likely to be alcoholics by the age of 18 when compared to their American counterparts. This is said to be because British parents actually support youth drinking as a way of "cultivating honesty". Seems to me all that's being cultivated is a youth culture of arrogant drunks.

I'd be interested to see this compared with other countries as well. My family were originally from Denmark, and it seems that *everyone* there drinks .... every meal I've had there has involved both beer and spirits - and yet you harly ever see drunk people on the street. Alcohol seems to be so much a part of the culture, and yet hardly anyone drinks to excess.

Cultivating honesty? Did it actually say that in the article? LOL - that is funny as hell.

The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Sex Pistol, Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays............

...................All British bands whose lives have been wrecked by drink and drugs --MY ARSE!

Britain must be one of the creative places in the world.

In America on the other hand you have to wait unill you are 21 to drink legally and if you drink more than 3 halves of Budwiser you are an alcoholic and you needs rehab and then when you leave rehab you become a born again Christian.

Its the Yanks who have the bad attitude with drinking not us Brits.

Yeah, but I think you'll find more American kids die from binge drinking in one session than English ones. You decide which is worse.

That's because Americans are more responsible than Brits which would explain why Americans have a hell of a lot more money!

America is 100 times bigger than the UK and there is loads of oil there.

Yeah but we relax after a drink. Our kids might get drunk but they don't go into school and shoot all their school friends.

They gave us roads, central heating and big noses. But the inbred violence has more to do with the Celts, Picts and Lee Bowyer's ancestors.

Thats rich coming from the most arrogant bunch of mongols in the world.I think sometimes the US media have to write shite like that to make themselves feel better about the US.You really have a lot of shite rammmed down your throats to make you think your oooohhhh sooooooooooo GREAT.Emmm makes you wonder if the Daily Mail was to write about the number of kids or Americans in general who see shrinks twice a week compared with the UK.Bunch of freacks!!

Its a British and Irish culture to have a few drinks and have a laugh.Parents dont want to watch there kids turn into pissheads but i think if kids drink a few beers at a young age it means they dont turn into spastics and can handle there alcohol unlike most yanks i have seen on my travels to the US and after watching the US collage knobheads getting drunk on low alchol beers on a trip to Mexico last year i think its a good idea to be able to handle your beer.
