Unseen Morrissey photos - Nagoya, Japan 1991

I was recently gifted a collection of Smiths/Morrissey collectables and memorabilia from a Japanese acquaintance residing in Tokyo, Ms. Keiko Kondo. Included was a series of eight good quality b&w photographs of Morrissey doing an impromptu meet-and-greet with fans on the platform of Nagoya station, Japan, while travelling the country on the 1991 'Kill Uncle' tour. As far as I am aware these rare photos were never part of an official photo session, and have never been given a general release.

Although Ms. Kondo was present at the Nagoya meet-and-greet, she was not responsible for taking the photos; rather, she received them from another fan in exchange for some of her own photos. Ms. Kondo saw Morrissey perform in Nagoya, Osaka, Yokohama, and at the Budokan in Tokyo. On one occasion she and a friend bumped in Boz Boorer in a record store. She told me Boz showed her a list of CDs Morrissey had requested. One of the names on the list was Ludus!

I have seen all of these photos before, except for the last two I believe. I have a feeling that they were in SYL before?

    ..we now know what Morrissey looked like in 1991. We can now die happy.

    Also, I have seen at least 3 of these before.

    Maybe he should go back to having all his photos done in black and white, it might briefly distract us from his rapidly receding and thinning hair, his beer belly and increasingly miserable-looking face.

    Still, at least the music is as good as ever, eh...? [ahem]

    If anyone else has seen these photos before, could you please elaborate on where you've seen them? I'd love to find out as much information about them as possible. Personally I hadn't seen them anywhere before.

      those pictures are flawless. he dazzled me when i first saw him on tv in 1985, and continues to till this day.

          Followed Morrissey at his 91 Japan shows, there were some nice street shots innit

          also Linder's Morrissey shot has a few Japan show
          photos
          it was tolled that every visitor had to leave
          the flowers and other memorblia to throw on stage
          was collected at the door of the venue

          no flowers allowed

          a year later and the NME tried to ruin Morrissey's
          flowing career, with flag waving article at the Madness reunion at Finsbury Park
          [luckily the NME isn't widely avaible in the USA
          where he was at the top at that moment]

          and they still try to ruin Morrisseys long time
          succesfull career

            isn't that Peter Hogg, AKA Morrissey's "Rent-A-Chap" to Morrissey's left with the steel-eyed stare? Hogg was ostensibly Morrissey's bodyguard but apparently was guarding his body not only all day but at all hours of the night as well.

                Thanks to 'seekastar' for emailing me with information regarding the second issue of the 'Sing Your Life' fanzine. One of the head shots of Morrissey was indeed on the cover of this issue. I assume many if not all of the other photos were reproduced inside.

                According to the description at ebay the photos were previously unpublished. But who was the photographer? Can anyone shed any light?

                I hope many of you have enjoyed seeing these photos for the first time, at Lucky Lisp if not in 'Sing Your Life'.

                  Seekastar, who worked on the 'Sing Your Life' fanzine, has written that Keiko Kondo may have submitted the photos - and was credited as the photographer. But Ms. Kondo told me she received them from a friend. Was Keiko's friend in fact responsible for taking the photos, and did Keiko merely submit them to SYL? Seekastar is checking. So stay tuned (if anyone's still interested!).

                  For anyone still interested in this story... Keiko wrote to tell me she got the photos from Kanako Ishikawa, who produced the Japanese Morrissey fanzine 'Lucky Lisp' - the namesake of my Morrissey website (Or should that be the other way around). An incredible coincidence.

                  The Lucky Lisp fanzine was written in both Japanese and English and ran for 11 issues, and included many original photographs from tours and performances. The fanzine ceased publication in 1996.

                  I must assume, then, that Kanako was the photographer responsible for these rarely seen Morrissey photos. If not, she may well have been the one who submitted the photos to 'Sing Your Life'.

                  Keiko also told me that some of the photos in question appeared in the Lucky Lisp fanzine. Which, I'm do not know.

                  Mystery solved (?)

                  Wow. I guess some things are just meant to be.

                  So, David T - how's about adding Lucky Lisp to 'Quick Links' now then? (Cheeky!)

                  Seekastar emailed to tell me the photos were submitted to 'Sing Your Life' by a contributor who simply signed herself "Akiko". In her original correspondence, Akiko noted she had taken and printed the photos herself.

                  At some point Akiko must have submitted the photos to the 'Lucky Lisp' fanzine. Prints of the photos were later passed on to Keiko Kondo, who then sent them on to me.

                  So that's that!

                    Ms Kondo has written to me insisting the photos were taken by Kanako Ishikawa.
